Sirius XM’s YouTube Channel Gains Popularity
Sirius XM launched their Youtube channel some time ago, and the secret is getting out. The company promotes their YouTube channel on the main website, and if you have not checked it out you are missing something special. Social Media is becoming a bigger part of Sirius XM’s marketing expansion, and it is a smart move for the company.
Sirius XM’s Facebook pages and Twitter accounts do a good job of building a sense of community with existing subscribers. The Sirius XM YouTube channel takes things a step further. It gives the world an eyes on view of what makes Sirius XM so compelling, and perhaps the best value in entertainment.
The YouTube videos include in depth exclusive interviews from people in the news, music artists, and even sports figures. Top personalities from across the media and entertainment landscape have become staples in Sirius XM’s Youtube channel. How popular and how important is this aspect of Sirius XM’s brand. VERY. Three Sirius XM video posted in March featuring Justin Bieber have already combined for over 825,000 views (see Justin do a drum solo below). People on a national scale are beginning to understand just what makes Sirius XM special and artists realize the value in getting unprecedented radio exposure through Sirius XM.
Whether you are a tech type or not, social media sites have become an integral part of peoples daily lives, and most of America’s top company’s are figuring out that having a presence in social media works to their advantage. For Sirius XM it is all about building the brand, and making Sirius XM relevant is any way possible. Cars deliver subscribers, but social media keeps them happy.
Position – Long Sirius XM Radio
“For Sirius XM it is all about building the brand, and making Sirius XM relevant is any way possible. Cars deliver subscribers, but social media keeps them happy.”
No, It’s all about the Content, Distribution and EBITDA.
If Howard leaves, Facebook and YouTube ain’t gonna make one leaving sub happy. I think I am going to go over to Sat Radio Playground soon. I am discovering real weaknesses here on this site. They may have more of a focus on the business end. I am not sure.
One think before I leave Spencer –
Have you ever heard Mel even once mention facebook or Twitter on an earnings call? I hear about Howard, I hear about free cash flow, I hear about cars, I even hear about Droid. I hear about a million things – Never Facebook or Twitter. Not once.
I think you are searching for things to write about and in the process revealing some real lack of understanding about the radio business.
By the way I have been following AltNation on Twitter for years.
http://twitter.com/altnation
Being a alt rock fanatic I go crazy when I miss a weekly Alt18 countdown. Abslolutely beserk. And Twitter keeps me up to date with every song i missed. Sometimes I am on there for hours searching songs and bands. I am also a member of a new wave/alt rock forum and spend time every single week for about 5 years on YouTube trying to link modern rock videos.
I do realize this means nothing if Howard leaves Sirius and if the economy tanks and car sales fall. Subs don’t subscribe because of Tweets. It brings us no loyalty to Sirius. We go whereever Howard goes.
Things like facebook, twitter and youtube are about building the brand on a national scale. Sirius XM features Youtube and Facebook on the front page of their web site. DJ’s mention it, and this will continue to happen.
It is not something to ignore. You don’t have to embrace it, but don’t bash it either. By the way, there is plenty to write about. I had two articles in the can already that you will see today. One published at 8:00. The other will go up later
It is meaningless and Mel never mentioned it ONCE. I bash you putting any importance on it whatsoever. I doubt you even knew AltNation/(Ethel) was on Twitter for years already.
Because it has NO EFFECT on business. You have made up some kind of business effect in your own mind. It proves to me you don’t really understand the radio business at all Spencer.
It’s amazing to me that you tout yourself as being so savvy but are so ignorant when it comes to social media. NO EFFECT? How could that be possible? Think about what you are saying. Facebook and twitter drive traffic to a website that sells product. How could it have “NO EFFECT?”
I completely agree. Building your brand is the key to their revenue and profitability. It takes time, ingenuity and persistence. But this is the only way to make themselves a household name without which you have a problem seeing your life. If they stay focused, and they will because Mel is smart enough to realize that, in five or ten years they will be comparable in brand recognition to companies like McDonald’s, Domino’s, Starbucks, etc. May be these are not the best comparisons but they are household names and folks do not think twice when they purchase their products.
“But this is the only way to make themselves a household name There is a real”
Now there is a real bright light for you. Howard is how Sirius already became a household name NOT FACEBOOK!
You advertise crap you get 0 subscribers. facebook is advertising. Sirius is about CONTENT!
This is the most ridiculous radio discussion I have ever had. It reminds me of the days when Prodigy AOL Excite and Broadcast.com were valued on eyeballs and ears instead of cash flow. Sickening
And may I add it is a pretty weak advertising vehicle at that. Since it costs nothing and every company in the freakin world is on Facebook the medium is far too fragmented to cause an impact like event advertising on TV.
People do subscribe because of tweets. The buzz created by people constantly tweeting and followers having to read it drives interest and subs. Ask TSSradio if tweets drive sales to their website. Its not debatable, its fact… social media drives sales/revenue. If you don’t want to believe it, that’s fine with me.
Ding Ding Ding – Sirius just got 5 more friends on Facebook today! Let’s up those EBITDA estimates! LOL
1. Mel is on twitter. Mel features facebook and YouTube on his website.
2. Growth is important, and happens by keeping what you have. This is a subscription business. Keeping subscribers is VERY important. Building the brand is important. Keeping relevant is important.
3. I follow several Sirius XM channels on my twitter, alt nation is among them. http://twitter.com/spencerosborne
4. Until about 6 months ago I thought texting was foolish. I use it quite a lot now because i see the value in it, and adapt to what people are doing.
5. You say it has no effect on business, I say it is about brand awareness and getting subscribers added value. If the consumer feels that there is added value they are likely to stay.
6. This is a media business, but it is also a subscription business. There is a reason that many companies utilize apps, facebook, twitter, etc.
7. I never stated that it will drive EBITDA, but if you think deepr, you can see that in order to grow EBITDA Sirius XM needs to grow subscribers, increase ad revenue, or raise prices. Social media helps keep subscribers.
8. Frear stated that Sirius XM wants to deliver content outside the satellite signals. In order to do this you need apps. You need to promote. Social media allows that to happen.
You show me one instance whetre Facebook Twitter or YouTube has hel;ped keep a subscriber Spencer. Quite honestly I think you have lost your mind.
Have you ever met one single person that stated I was going to stop my Sirius Sub but once I found they had a Facebook Page I decided to stay! ROFL
Good Lord! What is this nonsense you are writing. I knew for quite some time you had no history in following the media business (that comment about subscription and media being separate is glaring as cable TV is the most successful media business ever invented)but this constant article writing is revealing a real lack of understanding about radio. You are reaching for air. Really horrendous analysis.
Should have expected it but I am shocked. I don’t believe Brandon could do worse right now.
Now if you were to claim that Facebook and Twitter are a souped up extension of internet banner advertising I could somewhat accept that theory.
But this thing about a value added community retaining even one sub is beyond ludicrous. My 3 year old niece has better business sense than that.
Done with debate. It simply is not worth my time. Label me an idiot if you so desire. Shame on me for spending so much time dedicated satellite radio for nothing. You are welcomed to find your info anywhere. This siteis obviously isn’t your cup of tea. It Saturday and I have baseball game to go to.
Of course these things are an extension of the internet brand. I did not think I needed to state the obvious. Going deeper it is a connection point between satellite and internet…again, obvious. This company will be challenged to maintain ebitda growth. Anything they can do to maintain what they have is good. Social Media assists in this.
My subscription comment was in relation to the radio side of media. Of course Cable is subscription business. You should know well that I am aware of that, but instead you want to call me an idiot. Come on muscle. You know better than this. Media transforms, and social media is part of that, as is the internet
