Glen Beck Makes Headlines – For Satellite Radio Controversy Could Mean Dollars
Today a very public battle between Beck and New York Democratic Rep. Anthony Weiner has erupted onto the front pages of the Internet. As an investor, whether you takes Beck’s side or Weiner’s side does not really matter. What matters is that Beck getting national attention is a good thing for Sirius XM. This debate has gone mainstream, and Sirius XM will be there to broadcast it. That exposure is valuable.
The Democratic Rep. from New York, Anthony Weiner, released a report May 18th alleging that Goldline International Inc. “rips off consumers, uses misleading and possibly illegal sales tactics, and deliberately manipulates public fears of an impending government takeover.” In an interesting twist though, the congressman seems to have a personal and/or political axe to grind. He accuses Goldline of forming “an unholy alliance” with conservative talk show hosts. Goldline spokesman say that they do not base their ad decisions on politics, but do seek out places that carry a positive opinion on gold. Given the current state of the economy, I would theorize that conservatives would tend to be fans of gold right now, because they do not like the state of the economy.
Inflaming the situation Weiner said, “”But the facts are clear. Goldline rips off consumers and Glenn Beck helps.” Beck shot back asking listeners to submit photos showing Weiner with “his nose as a Weiner.” I would imagine that some of these photos would be material for the Howard Stern Show.
Regardless of the issues, having Glen Beck in the news and amid some controversy is good for satellite radio. Perhaps we will be hearing Goldline ads on Sirius XM soon.
Position – Long Sirius XM Radio
…which is precisely why I’ll never purchase sirius radio. If all you’re interested in is a buck at the expense of polarizing the general public with someone who rarely puts out factual statements, then you’re no better than he is. Your company is an insult to responsible radio content.
nick….
Sirius is not my company, nor do I work for them. Sirius XM is far more than Glen Beck. There are liberal talk show hosts who are polarizing as well. Politics is always polarizing.
Nick:
Check ONE fact that he’s wrong on, then I may change my view of him. Please post your wrong facts.
I should have been more specific…by “your” company, I meant the company you seem to want to back in this endeavor. Sleaze is sleaze, no matter how you slice it. To try to compare polarizing liberal talk show hosts to Beck is like comparing someone who stands up in a crowd and gets them worked up over opinion to a snake oil salesman. One is bringing commentary, whether biased or not, based on some semblance of facts…the other is only out to make a buck while twisting the minds of those to weak to investigate reality for themselves – a very dangerous activity that has the likes of shooters quoting guys like him.
wow, Nick, Would you please stop watching nbc news, abc news and every other news station. YOU ARE BRAIN WASHED!!! I bet you didn’t know that Obama is friends with a terrorist, DId you?
If you believe your last statement, Corey, then you’re just the type of weak-minded, spoon-fed listener/viewer I’m talking about. Take the time to research a topic now-and-again…
Nick….
Your definition of sleaze may differ from that of someone else. Personally I don’t fall into the trap of labels and can digest an opinion whether it be polarizing or not. There are times strong conservatives are irate, and times when strong liberals are irate. It is part of the political landscape. Some people who listen to both liberal as well as conservatives might well be considered loonies to other people and normal to yet another group, but that again is part of what makes this country special. I find your original comment odd. You wont purchase satellite radio because of Glen Beck? satellite Radio is a melting pot of content much like this nation is a melting pot of opinion. Do you not want to be a citizen because Glen Beck is a citizen? Beck is on television. Are you going to boycott television? Beck is on terrestrial radio. Is that another thing you will boycott? Who are you to define responsible radio content? You can define it for yourself, but not for everyone else. This country does not work that way.
Glenn beck is a clown. I never heard him a say a word about Bush. He should probably be washing cars somewhere or waiting tables.
Sorry Melly, but he states many negative facts about Bush as well. Apparently, you’re either listening to opinions of others, or you haven’t watched his show enough.
Glenn Beck is a phony shuckster, a terrible, sleazy, disgusting liar selling fear to stupid people.
However, he’s extremely popular and if he brings business in to Sirius, I’m all for him coming there. Business is business and free speech means a market place of ideas. The more ideas at the market place, the better. It’s not Beck’s fault that there are so many dumb people willing to buy what he’s selling. Shame on them, not him.
