May Auto Sales Top 1.6 million
With the best showing in years for several auto makers, sales in May of 2014 topped 1.6 million, well above the 1.44 million we saw in May of 2013. This also represents the second consecutive month that auto sales have demonstrated substantial growth over the year prior.
This is good news for SiriusXM in that about 70% of the new cars sold in the United States are equipped with Satellite Radio. May sales came in at 1,604,864 units. So far in the second quarter sales stand at 2,991,472 units, while year to date sales stand at 6,724,605 units. The pace for 2014 is above 16 million units.
The sales breakdown shows a shift in Q2 toward the trailing category of the OEM pool. These are trials that are not counted unless the consumer elects to keep the service after the initial three months free. It is months like this one, where GM has almost 300k in sales that the subscriber number really feels this.
All in all, I feel a lot better about auto sales in 2014 seeing the results for May. Stay Tuned!
Spencer,
Since May 1st you have 9 premium posts SIRI related and 28 premium posts ARNA related. What are your plans moving forward? Is this what a premium member should expect, heavy ARNA and light SIRI?
Denco….
It is interesting times with Arena, and sad to say it, uneventful times for SiriusXM at the moment. I am working on some things relating to SiriusXM, business models, LMCA, and the landscape, but it is a lot of conjecture at this point. In fairness, because this is a satellite radio themed site, every article that I post about Arena is in the premium section, despite that they will typically be published on SA at a later time.
Sirus XM is very hush at the moment. It is not easy getting any nuggets. This happened shortly after the buyout attempt by Liberty. I will be doing some pieces on the close of the quarter soon. Some changes in metrics that SiriusXM have done throw some serious wrenches in various models. It is getting harder to assess some of the old vs. the new and get to a meaningful conclusion. Stay tuned. I am working on things.
As an aside, Arena is an interesting play. I hope you are looking into it.
Got it…tks for the clarity.
