SiriusXM's 70s on 7 has really gone downhill

Not sure who’s doing the programming, but the music seems much softer. If that wasn’t enough, moving Jaybeau to nights in favor of Lisa has me scratching my head. If they wanted a female talent in the midday slot, there are plenty of other women out there who are much more polished. And what happened to Casey Kasem?

I just listened for an hour and the channel does not sound soft to me. I heard "Killer Queen" by Queen, "I Was Made For Lovin' You" by Kiss, "Right Place Wrong Time" by Dr. John, "We're An American Band" by Grand Funk and "Smoke From A Distant Fire" by the Sanford/Townsend Band.

Yes the 70s on 7 used to play some really unique songs...Not anymore.
The sound quality is not what it was either.

New here. I found this thread in a search. I wanted to comment.

Been a long-time listener of 70s on 7 and since the merger decades ago, the channel has seemingly been on auto-pilot, playing the same small handful of songs daily. For years, I have turned to that channel and heard the same familiar hits played from the day before and the day before that.

What seems to be more frustrating when listening these days is that they have taken away whatever charm was left on that channel. They used to feature jingles and TV/Movie soundbites from the era to bring you back to that special time.

In what appears to be cost-saving moves, the jingles are gone. Instead, the channel bumpers are dominated by the voice of Jonathan, who does these god-awful promos that aren't funny and played relentlessly to the point of annoyance. He's one of many DJs on the channel who drone on for minutes at a time during their show talking about nothing. We, as listeners, are not tuning in to hear about their personal lives. We want to listen to good music.

What the channel has become is an extremely limited playlist of songs that are repeated daily, accented with poorly produced bumpers and too much DJ bantering.

To answer the concerns of the OP, I think they do an effective job of mixing pop and rock. What they need to do is hire a music programmer who knows the music of the decade and can effectively update the playlists so that the music sounds fresh. To me, it sounds like the same few songs are playing on an endless repeat loop. I can put together a better 70s playlist on my phone through Apple Music, which SiriusXM should be concerned about if they want to remain competitive.

The 70's station got so bad - I had to remove it from my presets.

It is more than apparent that neither Lisa nor Jonathan know anything about the music of the 1970's. If they did, they wouldn't waste our time, talking about their personal lives! Were they even alive in the 1970's?

Lisa - bored us about moldy raspberries one day, more recently she had to talk about a friend's fake British accent. If I don't care about Lisa's life, why would I care anything about her friends? She belongs on regular AM/FM radio, if she wants to chat about her life, and interact with her listeners.

Jonathan - aside from the nasal, whiny voice which should not be on the air at all. He too wants to chat about his personal life, or that of his friends. This is a guy who repeatedly one day had to mention it was his birthday - aside from it clearly demonstrated poor manners, what were listeners to do - email him a Happy Birthday! Talk about begging for acknowledgement. And who cares what your friends favorite football team is...

Do they not not listen to the other stations, and hear the DJs talking about the music or the artists ? Do they know they are not on regular
    radio?

They have not paid their dues, to talk about anything they want, whereas a lot of the DJs have, for they have become iconic in radio land. But even then, these DJs tells us about the music. I don't hear Meg Griffin asking people to send Facebook news about their pets.

And whatever you do - don't give anymore time to Patrick McEnroe! In his short time recently - he mentioned his wife - way too often. I shudder to think what listeners would be in for if he gets a regular time slot.

I enjoy learning more about the music/artist as well as listening to the music. I have wide interests - though graduating in 1975, I know my 70's music probably the best. Sadly neither Lisa nor Jonathan have demonstrated any true knowledge of the 1970's music nor the artists.

    I feel your pain, Kirby.

SiriusXM’s disregard for its listeners is evident from the numerous complaints posted online over the past decade.

Industry news reports continually show the service hemorrhaging money and losing subscribers. They point the blame at sagging car sales but I think that's a diversion from the real truth -- listeners are suffering from music fatigue due to repetition and are moving to other services.

I agree with your assessment of Jonathan and Lisa. They are both terrible. That channel sounds like a college radio station where you give unseasoned DJs free rein to talk about "nothing." Jonathan's droll delivery and unfunny promos have ruined the vibe of that channel. Combine that with the daily grind of listening to "Margaritaville" and "Don't Fear the Reaper" among other standards being played relentlessly, I can see why it can drive anyone to find a better service to listen to.

Don't expect SiriusXM executives to "get the hint." They haven't for decades.

    Thanks for the support.
I knew there were quite a few listeners that agreed with me.

Apparently SXM Management won't do anything about Jonathan and/or Lisa. You are so correct - a college radio station where no one is in charge.

Lisa not long ago, wanted people to contact her father, via his Instagram account, giving people his contact info. He refurbishes record players and sells them. Recently she bragged about letting a friend stay with her while they were house hunting. I think this is nothing more than having listeners contact her with places available. Also - when you tell someone about a good deed you've done, it doesn't count.

She has to be reading her lead-ins to songs, everything is probably written out ahead of time. There is very little to no inflection in her voice. She also has a monotone voice. If she can't speak extemporaneously, she had no business in radio. Plus she has stolen the way Magic Matt does song lead-ins. That is pathetic, stealing from another DJ.

As for Jonathan, his 70s breaks, are too frequent, and the way he mocks the 70s culture is insulting. His voice is irritating. I don't care nor believe he has this great voice over background.

The one good thing Johnathan has going for him, is as a librarian who selects what books the library purchases and/or license, I will not buy any book where he is the reader. And I tell all my patrons, to always check the reader of audio books, and if you see his name as reader - don't bother and waster your time.

The best place for the two of them would be an overnight shift.
