Raul Reyes, an immigration attorney who contributes to CNN and NBC Latino, says this is a "losing proposition" that "raises serious legal, logistical and human rights issuies. It will create more problems than it solves, while doing little to improve our dysfunctional immigration system." Reyes says the average annual cost to detain an immigrant in the United States is $57,000. In 2019, The New York Times found that the annual cost of holding an immigrant at Guantánamo is $13 million. At the time, Donald Trump said that is "a fortune" and "crazy" – but now that he's King, he no longer cares.
