Retrumplicans in 43 states are trying to make it harder for minorities to vote. They will be facing strong opposition – and lawsuits. Georgia and Texas are just the beginning.

In a sign of a growing rift in the decades-old alliance between the conservative party and US corporations, McConnell said, “My advice to the corporate CEOs of America is to stay out of politics. Don’t pick sides in these big fights. Corporations will invite serious consequences if they become a vehicle for far-left mobs to hijack our country from outside the constitutional order."

They will never acknowledge that the 2020 Presidential election was the most safe and secure in our nation's history, nor will they ever admit that the true purpose of the restrictions is to make it much harder for minorities to cast a ballot. By the way, 80% of black voters voted for Biden in 2020. Now you know why Retrumplicans want to discourage blacks from voting. The "win-at-all-costs" Retrumplicans have no shame.

With new voting restrictions making their way through the Texas legislature, Democrats in the state are seeking to replicate the pressure campaign waged by activists and businesses in Georgia to stop the measures from becoming law. A coalition of activists and politicians has called on major corporations with a presence in Texas to stop making political contributions to any state lawmakers who have supported Senate Bill 7, which would limit early voting hours, eliminate drive-through voting centers and roll back an expansion of mail-in voting that was allowed in 2020 because of the coronavirus pandemic.

“Texas is already the hardest state in the country to vote in,” said Sarah Labowitz, policy director with the American Civil Liberties Union of Texas. The bill, which has been introduced in the Texas legislature, would also criminalize any attempt to help people fill out or deliver their mail-in ballot, she said.

A top Georgia Republican said Wednesday that Rudy Giuliani's false claims of election fraud – which were presented before state lawmakers – created momentum for a package of voting rights restrictions that recently became state law. "This is really the fallout from the 10 weeks of misinformation that flew in from Donald Trump," Georgia Lieutenant Governor Geoff Duncan said on CNN's New Day. "I went back over the weekend to really look at where this really started to gain momentum in the legislature, and it was when Rudy Giuliani showed up in a couple of committee rooms and spent hours spreading misinformation and sowing doubt."

Giuliani appeared before Georgia state lawmakers in December when he was serving on Trump's legal team. Giuliani tried, unsuccessfully, to convince legislators to convene a special session to overturn Joe Biden's victory in the state. Giuliani falsely claimed that thousands of dead people voted in the Georgia election, insisted that voting machines had changed people's votes and suggested thousands of others had voted illegally.

One of the most fundamental rights in a democracy is the right to vote. Retrumplicans are using Donald Trump's false claims of widespread voter fraud and a "rigged" and "stolen" election as justification to make it much more difficult for minorities (who tend to vote Democratic) to cast a ballot. The nation’s next big voting battle underway in Texas would outlaw 24-hour polling places and drive-thru voting and make it a crime for elections officials to mail unsolicited absentee ballot applications. Put another way: Everything Houston – the state’s biggest Democratic stronghold– did to expand ballot access last year, when the threat of the coronavirus made voting in-person more hazardous.
