A Texas Republican-backed bill that would eliminate the county elections commissioner role in heavily Democratic Harris County will move forward after the Texas Supreme Court today smacked down the county's request for emergency relief against the legislation.

When Senate Bill 1750 was approved by the state's GOP-controlled legislature and Republican Governor Greg Abbott earlier this year, Representative Jarvis Johnson (D-Harris County) called the bill "an egregious, disgusting, despicable act" and "a power grab on behalf of Republicans to try to take over elections and certainly steer elections their way."

Since the law was introduced, Harris County Attorney Christian Menefee has criticized the measure for targeting the largest county in the state. The county filed for emergency relief last week after the state appealed a ruling by Travis County Judge Karin Crumps determining the measure to be "unconstitutional." Crump stated the law would cause chaos in the county elections office just a few months before city elections.

The new law eliminating county election administrators goes into effect on September 1 and applies only to counties with 3.5 million residents. It will apply only to Harris County.

Harris County Commissioner Rodney Ellis said, "Democracy in Harris County and the State of Texas took another blow today with the Texas Supreme Court ruling that allows the Legislature to target Harris County and exercise unprecedented control over our elections. Whether it's banning drive-thru voting in 2021 or abolishing the Harris County election administrator’s office, we are on the front lines of a coordinated attack from state leaders who are intent on subverting our elections because they fear our diverse and powerful electorate.

Florida Retrumplicans came up with a redistricting map which would have eliminated the district represented by black Democrat Al Lawson and would have diluted the voting power of blacks by putting them in districts represented by white Retrumplicans. Yes, the new map violated the state's Constitution – but Retrumplicans no longer care about Constitutions. All they care about is Donald Trump, staying in power and rigging future elections in favor of Retrumplicans.

Retrumplicans in several states have been busy redrawing Congressional districts to dilute the voting power of blacks and Latinos and rig future elections in favor of white Retrumplicans. Often they get away with it. Often – but not always.

U.S. District Judge Jeffrey Brown, who was appointed by former President Donald Trump in 2019, today dealt a blow to Texas Republicans after he ruled that Galveston County violated the federal Voting Rights Act by splitting up Black and Latino communities so that white voters would make up a larger percentage of the electorate in each precinct. Brown called the GOP-drawn map a "clear violation" of federal law and determined that it "denies Black and Latino voters the equal opportunity to participate in the political process and the opportunity to elect a representative of their choice to the Commissioners court." The county has been ordered to redraw the map by October 20.
