For more than two years, a team of prosecutors has been investigating Donald Trump, Trump's taxes, the Trump Organization, Trump Tower, Trump's Seven Springs estate in New York, the Trump International Hotel & Tower in Chicago and Trump's hush-money payments to Stormy Daniels, with whom he had an affair. Seven targets of investigation – and all bear the name Trump. As for Trump, he calls the investigation a "witch hunt." Of course he does. If he is found guilty of tax fraud, tax evasion and inflating the value of his properties in order to obtain loans, he could be facing a lengthy prison sentence.

Manhattan grand jury indicts Trump Organization and CFO Allen Weisselberg
    CNN, Jun 30 2021 9:55 PM ET

A Manhattan grand jury today indicted the Trump Organization and its chief financial officer, Allen Weisselberg, according to people familiar with the matter. The charges are related to alleged tax crimes in connection with an array of perks and benefits awarded to employees and are expected to be unsealed Thursday. It was not immediately clear how many charges are in the indictments. Though former President Donald Trump faced multiple federal and state prosecutorial inquiries during his administration, the district attorney's indictment would be the first to charge his namesake company with criminal conduct. Trump himself isn't expected to be charged, his lawyer has said.

Why have so many people sold their souls to Donald Trump? They're willing to lie for him. They're willing to cheat for him. And some, as we witnessed on January 6, are willing to kill for him. Remember when Trump said being able to avoid paying taxes makes him "smart"? His CFO avoided paying taxes – and today is not looking very smart.

Prosecutors charge Trump Organization with a 15-year tax scheme
    CNN, Jul 1 2021 5:56 PM ET

New York prosecutors today charged the Trump Organization and its chief financial officer, Allen Weisselberg, with a 15-year alleged tax scheme that marked the first criminal case against the former President's namesake company. An indictment unsealed by the Manhattan district attorney's office charged the company and an entity called Trump Payroll Corporation with 10 counts and Weisselberg with 15 felony counts in connection with an alleged scheme stretching back to 2005 "to compensate Weisselberg and other Trump Organization executives in a manner that was 'off the books.'"

They were charged with a scheme to defraud, conspiracy, criminal tax fraud, and falsifying business records. Weisselberg was also charged with grand larceny and offering a false instrument for filing. Prosecutors said their investigation is ongoing. The probe has delved into whether the Trump Organization misled lenders, insurers and tax authorities about the value of certain properties, the treatment of tax deductions as well as hush money payments to silence an alleged affair with Trump.

Today's indictment, which focused largely on Weisselberg, described an array of luxury perks he received from the company allegedly in lieu of compensation, including an Upper West Side apartment, a pair of Mercedes-Benz cars for him and his wife and private school tuition for two grandchildren. All told, the indictment alleged, Weisselberg evaded federal, state and city taxes on $1.76 million in income over a period beginning in 2005.

With 15 indictments against him, will Trump Organization CFO Allen Weisselberg cooperate with prosecutors in return for lesser charges? Will he testify against Trump family members – or Trump himself? So far, he has refused to do so.

Michael Cohen was Trump's personal attorney and served as vice president of the Trump Organization from 2006 to 2018. He was sentenced to three years in prison after pleading guilty to tax evasion and other federal crimes. Cohen says Weisselberg should cooperate with prosecutors "now that he knows what handcuffs feel like." Cohen told CNN's Alisyn Camerota, "There is nothing that happened at the Trump Organization that did not go to Donald, whether it was the purchasing of paper clips or the payment of Allen Weisselberg's grandchildren's tuition. Every single thing went on Donald's desk for his signature."

Lock him up! Lock him up!

Weisselberg pleaded not guilty. Of course he did. Nobody in Donald Trump's orbit is ever guilty of anything – but many have been convicted and received prison sentences. Weisselberg will likely be next.

Trump seemingly acknowledges facts of prosecutors' case
The former President described the charges as a political attack on him but did not dispute some of the allegations against the Trump Organization and its CFO.

Donald Trump's top fundraiser has been indicted. Remember when Trump bragged that he surrounds himself "with the very best people"? How many have been arrested, indicted and sent to prison? I've lost count.

Donald Trump, who has bragged that he's a "shrewd businessman" and said avoiding taxes makes him "smart," has spent many years trying to keep his tax returns secret. Maybe we will finally find out what he's been hiding.

Biden's Justice Department says IRS 'must' hand over Trump tax returns to Congress
    CNN, Jul 30 2021 4:09 PM ET

The Justice Department today told the Treasury Department that it "must" turn over former President Donald Trump's tax returns to the House Ways and Means Committee, which first requested them more than two years ago. The direction came in an opinion released by the Justice Department's Office of Legal Counsel, which provides legal advice to the executive branch.

The House committee says the tax returns could "reveal hidden business entanglements raising tax law and other issues, including conflicts of interest, affecting proper execution of the former President's responsibilities. An independent investigation might also show foreign financial influences on former President Trump that could inform relevant Congressional legislation." It is unclear whether Trump, who has intervened in the case in his personal capacity, will continue to fight the release of the returns in court.

Donald Trump, who was lying when he promised to release his taxes, is asking the DC District Court to permanently block the Treasury Department from turning over his tax returns and to order Ways & Means Committee Chairman Richard Neal to “end all ongoing examinations” of Trump and his companies. Yeah, those sound like the actions of an innocent man. What is Trump hiding? Will we ever know?

House Democrats won't have a shot at getting Trump's tax returns from the IRS until at least November
