    Trump's taxes to be released

Donald Trump brags that he's a "genius" and a "shrewd businessman " and a "great deal-maker" – and yet he's spent many years trying to keep his tax records secret. Today he finally lost his battle. And, not surprisingly, the orange-skinned parrot continues to squawk, "Witch hunt! Witch hunt! Awwrkkk!"

Supreme Court allows release of Trump tax returns to New York prosecutor
    CNN, Feb 22 2021 2:11 PM ET

The Supreme Court today cleared the way for a New York prosecutor to obtain former President Donald Trump's tax returns, dealing a massive loss to Trump who has fiercely fought to shield his financial papers from prosecutors. The documents will be subject to grand jury secrecy rules that restrict their public release. The ruling is a bitter loss for Trump, even if the tax records are shielded from public disclosure, after he consistently argued that the subpoena issued by Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance was overbroad and issued in bad faith.

It means the grand jury investigation into alleged hush money payments and other issues will no longer be hampered by Trump's fight to keep the documents secret. The subpoenas span documents from January 2011 to August 2019, including his tax returns, from Mazars. The documents relate to the Trump Organization's employment of Trump's former lawyer Michael Cohen and hush money payments Cohen allegedly made to two woman who claimed to have had extramarital affairs with Trump. In a statement, the former President said the Vance investigation "is a continuation of the greatest political Witch Hunt in the history of our Country."

Last September, the New York Times reported that Trump paid no federal income taxes in ten of the past 15 years. He paid only $750 in taxes in 2016. He paid only $750 in taxes in 2017. In a 2016 debate, Hillary Clinton suggested Trump was refusing to release his tax records because he paid nothing in federal taxes. "That makes me smart," Trump gloated. "Smart"? Really? Trump could eventually be indicted on charges of tax fraud, bank fraud, insurance fraud and/or falsification of business records.

Supreme Court allows release of Trump tax returns
    HuffPost, Feb 22 2021 10:01 AM ET

The Supreme Court today paved the way for a New York City prosecutor to obtain former President Donald Trump’s tax returns and other financial records as part of a criminal investigation, a blow to his quest to conceal details of his finances. The justices without comment rebuffed Trump’s request to put on hold an October 7 lower court ruling directing the former President’s longtime accounting firm, Mazars USA, to comply with a subpoena to turn over the materials to a grand jury convened by Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance. The data could provide details on Trump's wealth and the activities of his family real-estate company, the Trump Organization.

Vance issued a subpoena to Mazars in August 2019 seeking Trump’s corporate and personal tax returns from 2011 to 2018. Trump’s lawyers sued to block the subpoena, arguing that as a sitting President, Trump had absolute immunity from state criminal investigations. The Supreme Court in July rejected those arguments but said Trump could raise other objections to the subpoena. Trump’s lawyers then argued before lower courts that the subpoena was overly broad and amounted to political harassment, but US District Judge Victor Marrero in August and the New York-based 2nd US Circuit Court of Appeals in October rejected those claims.

Vance’s investigation, which began more than two years ago, had focused on hush money payments that the President’s former lawyer and fixer Michael Cohen made before the 2016 election to two women – adult-film actress Stormy Daniels and former Playboy model Karen McDougal – who said they had sexual encounters with Trump. In recent court filings, Vance has suggested that the probe is now broader and could focus on potential bank, tax and insurance fraud, as well as falsification of business records.

In 2011, Trump said he would release his taxes if Obama released his birth certificate. In 2014, Trump said he would release his taxes if he decided to run for president. He never had any intention of releasing his taxes. He is hiding something. Something big.

Did Trump inflate the value of his buildings and assets when he applied for loans but underestimate the value of his buildings and assets when he did his taxes? Considering he paid no taxes in ten of the past 15 years, the answer appears to be "yes." "Lock him up! Lock him up!"

Donald Trump loves to brag about being a "great deal-maker." He might soon get a chance to make several more deals – or, as prosecutors refer to them, "plea bargains."
