President Donald Trump impeached – again

Donald Trump is now the first United States President to be impeached twice. The vote in the House of Representatives was 232 yea and 197 nay with five abstentions (one Democrat, four Republicans). Two hundred twenty-one Democrats voted to impeach. Ten Republicans sided with them.

The Houseof Representatives has just voted to impeach President Trump for the second time – making him the only US president to ever be impeached twice. The resolution passed 232 to 197. The impeachment resolution charges Trump with a single article, "incitement of insurrection," for his role in last week's deadly Capitol riot.

A White House aide said Trump seems to have no concept of what this impeachment means historically or politically. Trump's main concern is that the riot and the impeachment will hurt his businesses. He thinks only about himself. Trump did call the impeachment a "hoax" and a "witch hunt." Where have I heard that before?

Dana Bash: It's reprehensible that Republicans who propagated election fraud lies did not apologize
Maureen Chowdhury, CNN, Jan 13 2021 14:27 PM ET

CNN's Dana Bash called out House Republicans who did not come out and admit they were wrong for propagating false election fraud claims during the House impeachment debate. "Those who did say that the election was stolen, those who propagated that, those who fed the lies of the President, 'I'm sorry, I made a mistake,' we heard that from nobody. And that's frankly reprehensible," she said. "Especially given the fact that they all know better."

"I think they know the reality. I think they know the truth. I think, in their heart of hearts, they understand that when the Secretaries of States in swing states like Georgia or Pennsylvania or Arizona say 'This election wasn't stolen' and it was free and fair and honest, that actually is the truth," Bash continued. Bash also highlighted how, aside from the backtracking from election fraud claims, Republicans didn't acknowledge the live footage from last week's attack which show rioters stating "the President told us to come here."

Former US Attorney Joyce Vance told MSNBC that by refusing to acknowledge Biden's election win and by refusing to vote to impeach Donald Trump, Republicans are sending the message that the law does not matter. The ten Republicans who voted in favor of impeachment are to be commended for placing their country above their party. They are Tom Rice, David Valadao, Anthony Gonzalez, Peter Meijer, Liz Cheney, Dan Newhouse, Fred Upton, John Katko, Adam Kinzinger and Jaime Herrera-Beutler.

Impeaching Trump again has no downside – for Democrats or America
It’s not just about Trump, it's about a party whose insiders are devoted to one man and no principles.

South Carolina Republican Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina said an impeachment vote "will only lead to more hate and a deeply fractured nation." In other words, he is afraid to criticize or censure Donald Trump, the man who is directly responsible for much of our nation's hatred and fracturing. To convict Trump on the charge of inciting an insurrection, the Senate will need at least 17 Republicans to side with Democrats. I doubt that is likely to happen. Even with Trump out of office, a majority of Republicans will continue to be blindly loyal members of his cult.

Senate GOP torn over convicting Trump: 'There's no love lost'
    CNN, Jan 14 2021 5:09 PM ET

To many Senate Republicans, including Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, there's no question in their minds: President Donald Trump committed impeachable offenses. But getting McConnell and at least 16 other Republicans to convict Trump after he's left office is another question entirely. "There is no love lost within the Senate Republican Conference for Trump," said one GOP source familiar with internal discussions. "Everybody is ready for this end. But there is a really open question about how many people will vote to convict him after his term will have expired."

Privately, Republicans have reviewed internal polling showing Trump's support cratering among GOP voters since Election Day – especially since last week when he incited a violent mob of his supporters to riot in the Capitol, leading to the deaths of five people. But even after he leaves office, he is bound to still maintain significant sway with the GOP base, something Republicans facing reelection – and potential primary challengers – will be forced to confront.

The House of Representatives voted to impeach Donald Trump on the charge of inciting an insurrection. Lindsey Graham hopes every Republican Senator votes against convicting Trump. He pleaded,“Please do not justify and legitimize what the House did.” No, but he thinks it's perfectly okay to "justify and legitimize" what Trump did. Graham, same as the majority of his Republican colleagues, have sold their souls to Donald Trump and remain blindly loyal members of his cult.

Rudy Giuliani, who has sold his soul to Donald Trump, spread false claims that the Presidential election was rigged and filed several lawsuits seeking to overturn Biden's victory in various states. He failed. Last week, Trump instructed his aides to not pay Giuliani's outstanding legal fees. Giuliani was demanding $20,000 per day. Despite his falling-out with Giuliani, Trump was considering having Giuliani represent him in the impeachment trial – but that ain't gonna happen.

During the January 6 attack on the Capitol, one rioter screamed at police, "We were invited here! We were invited by the President of the United States!” A Kentucky man who took part in the insurrection told the FBI, “President Trump said to do so." A Texas woman told the FBI, "I thought I was following my President. He asked us to be there. I was doing what he asked us to do.” Today, even Mitch McConnell is acknowledging Trump's role in inciting the insurrection.

Mitch McConnell: Capitol Hill mob was 'provoked' by Trump
    CNN, Jan 19 2021 2:42 PM ET

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said today that the mob that attacked the Capitol was "provoked" by President Donald Trump, placing part of the responsibility on him for the deadly riot, as the Senate prepares for an impeachment trial on whether to convict the President for "incitement of insurrection" and potentially disqualify him from holding office in the future.

The typically tight-lipped Senate Republican leader rarely broke from Trump during Trump's four years as President. But he led the Senate's certification of the Presidential election that the rioters pledged to overturn and has strongly condemned the violence at the Capitol he has served in as a Senator for 36 years. "The mob was fed lies," McConnell said on the Senate floor. "They were provoked by the President and other powerful people."

McConnell wants to send Trump a summons on January 28 and then allow him 14 days to assemble a legal team and prepare briefs before the impeachment trial begins. Several Democrats say they will agree to this if Republicans are willing to quickly confirm Biden's Cabinet picks.
