McConnell privately says he wants Trump gone as Republicans quietly lobby him to convict

    https://www.cnn.com/2021/01/22/polit...ans/index.html

An opinion piece by Paul Waldman in today's Washington Post responds to the above story. It's headlined, "Don’t be fooled: Mitch McConnell will never vote to convict Trump." Waldman expects only "a couple of Republicans" will vote to convict Trump on the charge of inciting an insurrection. Trump may be out of office but the Cult of Donald Trump is alive and well. How sad for our nation and our democracy.

Senator Patrick Leahy, not Chief Justice John Roberts, expected to preside over impeachment trial

Just minutes after all 100 Senators were sworn in as jurors in the Trump impeachment trial, 44 Retrumplicans (out of 49) sided with Rand Paul in seeking to have the impeachment trial dropped because it is "unconstitutional." It is not unconstitutional. Legal experts from both parties have said so. And how sad it is that the Retrumplicans continue to place Donald Trump and their party above the Constitution and above our democracy. Here is further proof of that: Republican leaders in Oregon and Arizona have censured the few Republicans who voted in favor of impeachment. Inciting an insurrection that led to the deaths of five people is perfectly okay with Retrumplicans – as long as it's done by Donald Trump. They worship him almost as much as he worships himself. We need to remember this in 2022 and vote Retrumplicans out of office.

Senate impeachment trial arguments to start February 9

    https://www.cnn.com/2021/01/22/polit...mer/index.html

Convicting Trump on the impeachment charge of inciting an insurrection would require the votes of all 50 Senate Democrats and at least 17 Senate Retrumplicans. That will not happen. Trump is no longer in office but almost all Retrumplicans remain 100% loyal to him and no longer care about the Constitution or the rule of law. How sad.

What could Trump possibly do that would lead Senate Retrumplicans to convict him on impeachment charges? The sad answer is that there is nothing he could ever do that will turn Retrumplicans against him. With very few exceptions, they will remain blindly loyal members of the Cult of Donald Trump until their dying day. Trump proved to be prescient when he said he could shoot somebody on Fifth Avenue and not lose any votes. We now know he can incite an insurrection that leaves five people dead – and the Retrumplicans will continue to support him. How sad.

In the Republican Party, the post-Trump era lasted a week
Stephen Collinson, CNN, Jan 28 2021 12:46 AM ET

Two roads diverged in American politics and the Republican Party chose the one traveled by disgraced ex-President Donald Trump and QAnon conspiracy theorists. While pundits ponder the GOP's future and traditionalists hope to change course out of the wreckage left by Trump's insurrection, Washington's power players and state activists have already made their choice.

Highlighting the former President's lightning fast rehabilitation, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy will visit Trump in Florida on Thursday after repudiating his own criticism of the incitement of the US Capitol riot. Only a week after Trump left the White House, it's clear that his party is not ready to let him go. Extremists and Trumpists are on the rise while lawmakers who condemned his aberrant conduct fight for their political careers. The anti-Trump wing, represented by members of Congress such as Senators Ben Sasse of Nebraska and Mitt Romney of Utah and Illinois Reresentative.Adam Kinzinger, look like a small and outmaneuvered force.

Members of the Senate and the House of Representatives take an oath to "support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic." Unfortunately, Retrumplicans do not honor that oath. They choose to support and defend Donald Trump and their party. The Constitution does not matter to them.

Here is a story about Republicans "crawling back to Trump." They do not seem to care that many thousands of voters have quit the Republican party since the riot.

In February 2020, Senate Retrumplicans' acquittal of Donald Trump on impeachment charges of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress sent him the very clear message that he is above the law and above the Constitution and can say and do whatever he wants. He is answerable to no one and accountable to no one. In January 2021, Trump incited an insurrection at the Capitol that left five people dead – and Retrumplicans still do not want to hold him accountable. Their attitude is: Let somebody else do it.

Senate Republicans say Trump should be held accountable for riot – but not by them
    CNN, Jan 29 2021 8:12 PM ET

To Senate Minority Whip John Thune, former President Donald Trump's actions ahead of the deadly Capitol riot are totally indefensible. "No, not at all," the number two Republican said when asked if he can defend what Trump did. "The way he handled the post-election, both in terms of his public statements and things that he tried to do to change the outcome, no."

But like other Republicans, Thune has no clear answer to this key question: What should they do to Trump after he lied to his supporters about the election being stolen, promoted the January 6 rally in DC and urged demonstrators to go to the Capitol, which they later rampaged in a deadly riot? "Well, that's a good question," said Thune, who faces reelection in South Dakota next year. "One way, obviously, would be in a court of law."

With the impeachment trial for Trump set to begin February 9, Senate Republicans are criticizing him without doing anything about his actions, hoping to put distance between themselves and the former President without casting any votes that could cause a backlash from Trump and his fervent supporters. Many say something should be done about what Trump did – but just not by them.

I would love to know how many of the people who are quitting the Retrumplican party are joining the Democratic party. And after the Senate Retrumplicans acquit Trump in his upcoming impeachment trial, many more thousands of voters are sure to quit the Retrumplican party. They're not only losing voters, they're losing donors.

Senate Retrumplicans are opposed to Chanley testifying at Trump's impeachment trial. They want to have a sham trial with no witnesses testifying against their idol.

Horned Viking 'shaman' who stormed Capitol now willing to testify against Trump
    HuffPost, Jan 29 2021 11:57 PM

The Capitol rioter decked out in a fur hat with horns is now willing to testify against his former hero Donald Trump at the former President’s impeachment trial, according to his lawyer. Jacob Chansley of Arizona, who calls himself the “QAnon Shaman,” feels he has been “betrayed” by Trump, who failed to pardon him and others who attacked the Capitol, said attorney Al Watkins, and "is willing to discuss “whether the words of former President Trump were understood by Mr. Chansley to be nothing short of an invitation to go to the Capitol with the President to fight like hell.” Chansley, also known as Jake Angeli, had been “horrendously smitten” with Trump and believed he was following the then-President’s orders in the insurrection at the Capitol.

Trump’s impeachment trial in the Senate is set to begin the week of February 8. Testimony from someone like Chansley, who believes he was following orders, could be critical in determining if Trump is guilty of the “incitement of insurrection” article of impeachment that was filed against him by the House. Chansley told investigators he came to the Capitol “at the request of the President that all ‘patriots’ come to D.C. on January 6,” according to court records.
