At least 99 of Florida's 113 Republican legislators are supporting Governor Ron DeSantis for President. Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung said today the support for DeSantis is the result of an intimidation campaign: "DeSantis and his political cronies have continued to terrorize the Florida legislature with the threat of his veto pen if they don’t acquiesce to his demand to endorse his candidacy." Cheung, of course, gave no examples of any legislation DeSantis threatened to veto.

DeSantis believes Trump has no chance of winning in 2024. Texas Senator John Cornyn agrees, telling reporters today, "I don’t think Trump understands that when you run in a general election, you have to appeal to voters beyond your base. There’s no question that he has some enthusiastic supporters as part of his base. That works well for him in a Republican primary but not when you need to expand your appeal in a general election."

DeSantis is expected to announce his Presidential bid on May 24 in a Twitter Spaces session with Elon Musk. His running mate might be Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders, who served as White House press secretary from 2017 to 2019 and then became a contributor to Fox News. She helped spread Trump's Big Lie of a rigged stolen election, she insisted Trump has never promoted or incited violence, she accused the news media (with the exception of Fox News, of course) of spreading ":fake news" about Trump and she said every one of the 16 women who accused Trump of sexual improprieties is a liar. She is a typical far-right, conspiracy-theory-believing wacko.

Republican Senator John Cornyn said, "We need to come up with an alternative" to Trump. His party has several alternatives – and the majority of Retrumplicans continue to support Trump. Here is a Bloomberg editorial published today:

Republicans need to dump Trump if they want to win
The former President is a thoroughgoing drag on the party’s prospects. That’s to say nothing of the indictments, investigations and grand-jury proceedings.

Pence has zero chance of becoming President. He needs the support of Retrumplicans – and most of them believe Donald Trump's Big Lie of a rigged, stolen election and consider Pence to be a traitor for doing his Constitutional duty and confirming Joe Biden's Electoral College victory.

While President, Trump broke almost every promise he made, including promises to lower drug prices, repeal the Affordable Care Act and build a border wall and make Mexico pay for it. He also promised, "No one will gain more from tax cuts than low- and middle-income Americans." Eighty-three percent of the benefits of his $2 trillion tax cut went to the wealthiest 1% of Americans. Trump is now promising "peace." Other than his blindly loyal supporters, does anyone think he would be able to keep this promise?

Donald Trump is promising peace in a second term. War with Iran seems more likely.
Trump is so focused on the Islamic Republic that he reportedly kept a document about it that he knew was classified after he left office. With global concern mounting over Iran's nuclear program, his volatility poses serious risk.

Last month, an ABC News/Washington Post poll found that 68% of voters believe Joe Biden, 80, is too old to serve a second term as President. "Too old"? Really? Cameroon's President Paul Biya is 90, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Saudi Arabian King Salman bin Abdulazid Al Saud are 87 and Norway's King Harald V is 86.

After Trump announced in 2015 that he would run for President, the Republican party quickly became The Cult Of Donald Trump. His blindly loyal supporters worship him, protect him and defend him and are willing to fight for him and even die for him. Christie is the eighth person – so far – to challenge Trump for the 2024 Retrumplican nomination. Each of the eight have the same chance of winning the nomination: zero. Even if Trump winds up convicted of criminal charges, and even if Trump is sentenced to prison, he will still be the nominee.
