    The police thread

If police officers didn't carry loaded guns, accidents such as this would not happen. Oh wait, maybe that isn't such a good idea.

Two gunmen tried to rob a jewelry store in South Florida and fled when the owner started shooting at them. They commandeered a UPS truck and led police on a lengthy chase before getting stuck in rush-hour traffic. Police killed them in a shoot-out that also killed the UPS driver and a motorist. In August, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed a bill (AB 392) limiting police officers' use of deadly force. They now have to be able to show that deadly force is necessary because of an imminent threat. Fearing for their safety is no longer a justification. I have a feeling Florida's legislature and Governor may now decide to pass an identical bill.

Four died in a shootout with police after a UPS truck was hijacked in Florida. Could it have been avoided?

Was this advice really necessary? Don't most black men already think white cops act like white supremacists?

This number is smaller than last year's total of 47 but it clearly shows that good guys with guns do not always stop bad guys with guns. In most countries, yes, but not in the United States of America, which has more guns than people.

George Floyd, a black man, died May 25 in Minneapolis. He had been arrested for using a counterfeit bill. A white police officer had knelt on Floyd's neck for almost nine minutes while Floyd was handcuffed and lying face down, complaining that he couldn't breathe. Following Floyd's death, there have been many protests and demonstrations worldwide, demanding an end to racism and police brutality. Yeah, good luck with that.

Kneeling during the National Anthem is a form of free speech and is protected by the First Amendment, but – news flash! – it will not end police brutality.

Colorado police chief apologizes over four black girls held at gunpoint
    Reuters, Aug 4 2020 6:47 PM

A Colorado police chief apologized today to family members of four black girls who were held on the ground at gunpoint over the weekend by officers who mistakenly believed they were riding in a stolen car. Video footage, shot by a bystander and broadcast on local television shows the girls, ages 6, 12, 14 and 17, on the ground with several police officers of the Denver suburb of Aurora standing over them. The car was being driven by Brittney Gilliam, 27, the mother of the 6-year-old. Gilliam is shown in the video being handcuffed by police. The incident stemmed from an erroneous report that Gilliam, her nieces, sister and daughter were in a stolen car. Attorney David Lane said he will seek a legal settlement with the city.

The officers' actions were self-defeating. Now the man has another complaint against them.
