Among the dead: the gunman's father and brother. Among the wounded: the gunman's mother. So often, anger + guns = murder. But how can anyone have so much hatred and anger that he would shoot his own parents?

A city council member asked, "How does such a beautiful and peaceful event become overshadowed by tragedy in seconds?" The answer: Too many Americans have too much anger, too much hatred and unlimited access to too many guns – and Republican Congressmen are in thrall to the NRA and do nothing about gun violence other than to offer their meaningless "thoughts and prayers."

Gilroy, south of San Jose, is "the garlic capital of the world" and since 1979 has held an annual garlic festival with food booths, vendors, live entertainment, cooking contests and a Miss Gilroy Garlic pageant. Today, unfortunately, the festival included a mass shooting. KTLA-Channel 5 is reporting the gunman was shot and killed by police. One of the dead was a 3-year-old boy. Just another typical day in the United States of America.

Legan opened fire with an AK-47 assault rifle purchased July 9 in Nevada. That's the weapon of choice for mass murderers. He was one of those white nationalists whom Donald Trump praises as "very fine people" and he had complained on Instagram about "hordes of mestizos and Silicon Valley white twats."

The gunman is described as a "disgruntled" employee. In most countries, that word means "discontented; ill-humored." In the United States of America, unfortunately, it has come to mean "murderous."

Today in an editorial referencing Sunday's mass shootings in Brooklyn and Gilroy, the Los Angeles Times observed, "The violence, of course, won't move President Trump or Congress to act. Trump said Monday we should continue to 'work together as communities and citizens' to prevent violence. But in fact he has done virtually nothing to address our national scourge. He has fallen into the full embrace of the National Rifle Association in ways no other recent President has done. 'You have a true friend in the White House,' he told the NRA two years ago, after the group spent $30 million to help him get elected."
The Gilroy gunman legally purchased his AK-47 in Nevada but such weapons are illegal to own in California. Speaking to reporters at Santa Clara Medical Center, Governor Gavin Newsom asked, "How is that possible? I have no problem with the 2nd Amendment. You have a right to bear arms – but not weapons of goddamned mass destruction."
Of course Trump, the Republicans and the NRA strongly disagree.
