An official describes the new policy as "humane." What a nice change from the cruel, heartless, anti-immigrant, anti-asylum, anti-Mexican, anti-Muslim policies of the previous President..

Biden administration to begin processing migrants who were forced to 'Remain in Mexico' under Trump
    NBC News, Feb 12 2021 3:08 AM

Next week, the Biden administration will begin processing immigrants who have been waiting, often in poor conditions, under the Trump-era "Remain in Mexico" policy and allowing them to live in the US while they await rulings on their asylum cases. The policy, also known as Migrant Protection Protocol or MPP, began in January 2019 and has been criticized as inhumane by international organizations as Central Americans often went without adequate shelter and became the targets of violence in Mexico as they waited months or more than a year before they were allowed to make their case for asylum in a US court date. The officials estimated more than 25,000 migrants are currently waiting at the border under the program, and said they would begin allowing approximately 600 per day to enter.

Only nine Republicans joined Democrats in passing the American Dream & Promise Act, which would give Dreamers – people who came to the US as undocumented minors and are protected under the DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) program – a pathway to citizenship. In the Senate, the Act would need at least 60 votes to pass and Mitch McConnell will make sure that doesn't happen. In his Inaugural address, Biden emphasized "unity" and "conciliation" and the importance of Democrats and Republicans working together to solve the antion's problems. A nice speech – but McConnell and the Retrumplicans are determined to block almost everything Biden proposes. Retrumplicans are the party of "No."

Measure, which aims to undo Trump’s hardline immigration policies, is likely to hit a wall in the evenly divided Senate.

Donald Trump stacked the Supreme Court with right-wing judges who think like he does – and this is the result:

Supreme Court rules against immigrants with temporary status
The court ruled that thousands of people living in the US for humanitarian reasons are ineligible to apply to become permanent residents.

Under Barack Obama, detained migrants who were pregnant or nursing were eligible for release as their cases made their way through immigration courts. Under racist, bigoted, immigrant-hating white nationalist Donald Trump, such migrants were arrested and imprisoned. Under Joe Biden, they will no longer be jailed – although they still may be deported.

Emma Lazarus, in her poem The New Colossus, wrote, "Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!” A Texas judge just blew out the lamp and shut the door.

Federal judge rules DACA program illegal, suspends new applications
    Reuters, Jul 16 2021

A federal judge in Texas today blocked new applications to a program that protects immigrants who were brought to the United States as children from deportation but said the hundreds of thousands of people already enrolled would not be affected until further court rulings. US District Judge Andrew Hanen sided with a group of states suing to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, arguing that it was illegally created by former President Barack Obama in 2012.

Hanen found the program violated the Administrative Procedure Act when it was created but said that since there were so many people currently enrolled in the program – nearly 650,000 – his ruling would be temporarily stayed for their cases and their renewal applications. "To be clear," the judge said, the order does not require the government to take "any immigration, deportation or criminal action against any DACA recipient."

Democratic President Joe Biden, who was Vice President when Obama created the program, has said he wants to create a permanent pathway to citizenship for DACA recipients, known as "Dreamers." In his ruling, Hanen agreed with critics of the program who argued that DACA did an end-run around the legislative process by providing benefits to Dreamers without Congressional authorization. Even though the ruling protects DACA holders for now, the prospect of future court proceedings creates more uncertainty for the group.

Biden wants Congress to grant "a path to citizenship for Dreamers that will provide the certainty and stability that these young people need and deserve." Good luck with that. Congressional Retrumplicans are pretty much opposed to everything Biden proposes.

While President, Donald Trump stacked the Supreme Court with conservatives whom he knew would be supportive of his anti-immigrant programs and policies – so today's ruling is no surprise. The three liberal Justices dissented.

The conservative-leaning court ordered the administration to reinstate the Trump-era program that forces people to wait in Mexico while seeking asylum in the US.

In January 2019, immigrant-hating Donald Trump implemented Migrant Protection Protocols, commonly known as the "Remain in Mexico" policy, requiring asylum-seeking migrants from Central America and other nations to wait in Mexico for their claims to be reviewed. Biden rescinded the program in 2021. Texas and Missouri sued. An appeals court sided with the states. Today the Supreme Court sided with Biden.
