As steadily rising temperatures cause faster melting of glaciers and sea ice, it is getting increasingly difficult for Emperor penguins to form breeding colonies, forage for food and avoid predators. One study says 98% of Emperor penguin colonies could be on the brink of extinction by 2100. Yikes!

Emperor penguin colonies face extinction due to climate change, US officials say
The Fish & Wildlife Service is seeking protections under the Endangered Species Act. An independent study found that nearly all colonies could be wiped out by 2100.

Ocean temperatures continue to rise. Global levels of CO2 and methane, the main greenhouse gases, hit record highs in 2021. Summer 2021 was Europe's hottest summer on record.

Oceans hit record-high temperatures in 2021, another sign of worsening climate crisis
The past eight years have been the eight hottest ever recorded on the planet.

Last week, scientists with the World Meteorological Organization reported that temperatures in eastern Antarctica were 70º above normal. Now we learn the Conger Ice Shelf collapsed. If other large ice shelves collapse, sea levels could rise by more than ten feet!

Antarctic ice shelf nearly the size of Los Angeles collapsed as temperatures soared to 40º above normal

The largest reservoir in the United States is Lake Mead – and it isn't faring any better than Lake Powell. Its water level has fallen 140 feet since 2000.

Lake Powell, the country's second-largest reservoir, is drying up.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature estimates there are around 26,000 polar bears worldwide. Most live north of the Arctic Circle but there are also polar bear populations in Canada, Alaska, Russia, Greenland and Norway. Their survival is threatened by loss of sea-ice habitat due to rising temperatures.

Polar bears face existential threat as ice melts. Some in Greenland have already adapted.
An isolated group of polar bears living in southeast Greenland has surprised scientists with its ability to survive in a habitat with relatively little sea ice.
