Landmark owns only 56 theaters in 27 cities but it's the nation's largest theater chain dedicated to independent films and foreign films. I have a fear that if Amazon buys the chain, the theaters will start showing episodes of Bosch, Transparent, Catastrophe, Mozart In The Jungle and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.

PepsiCo CEO Indra Nooyi touts SodaStream's "nutritious" products. Let me see if I understand this: Sodas are not nutritious but they instantly become nutritious if you call them "sparkling water." Huh!

Psychologists say constant exposure to negative news stories can lead to stress, anxiety and depression. Who knew, right? Yesterday I started a new thread devoted to positive uplifting news stories. Today, to paraphrase Jimmy Durante, Google is getting in on the act:

Google Assistant’s latest feature delivers just the 'good news'
    TechCrunch, Aug 21 2018

You’re not the only one feeling run down by the news of the day. The folks at Google apparently believe we could all use a dose of good news at times. The company today announced it's testing a new Google Assistant feature called "Tell me something good" that will allow users to hear a summary of more uplifting news stories. The stories will focus on people who are "solving problems for our communities and our world," says Google.

To activate the feature, Assistant users in the US can say "Google, tell me something good" to kick off the daily briefing of happy stories. The stories are selected and summarized by the nonpartisan nonprofit Solutions Journalism Network and will be chosen from a wide range of media outlets.

Memo to PETA: Those "caged animals" on the Barnum's Animals boxes were not real -- they were just drawings.

Nabisco animal crackers set free from cages in box redesign after PETA expresses concerns
    Chicago Tribune, Aug 21 2018 1:20 PM

Animal crackers, long depicted behind bars in iconic packaging that resembled circus boxcars, are going cage-free. Bowing to pressure from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals — and changing tastes — Mondelez International is rolling out new box artwork for the small, animal-shaped cookies, with the lion, giraffe, elephant, gorilla and zebra set loose and roaming wild. "We’re delighted," PETA spokesman Ben Williamson said today. "We’re celebrating the redesign just as we celebrated the end of the circus."

Still named Barnum’s Animals crackers, a nod to circus impresario P.T. Barnum, the cookies were launched in 1902 by Nabisco’s forerunner, the National Biscuit Company. Animal crackers are one of the oldest brands in the portfolio of Deerfield-based snack giant Mondelez, which owns Nabisco. The packaging has changed little over the years, with animals caged in boxcars, ostensibly in transit for the circus, long a battleground for PETA over alleged abuse of animals.

PETA first reached out to Mondelez in April 2016 to express concerns about the animal crackers box and its representation of a circus life where animals were often mistreated and forced to perform tricks. In January 2017, Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus announced it would be closing after 146 years, ending the "Greatest Show on Earth" amid dwindling audiences and pressure from PETA and other animal rights groups. Six months later, Mondelez told PETA it was planning a redesign of the animal crackers box that would likewise liberate the creatures from cages.

Orchard Supply Hardware, popularly known as OSH (pronounced "Osh"), has 98 stores in California, Oregon and Florida. OSH went through a bankruptcy in 2013 and was purchased by Lowe's. The chain is now going out of business, leaving 4,300 employees out of work.

I guess we can say Target is more than meeting its sales targets. Target shares, which were selling for a measly 87¢ forty years ago, closed today at $85.94, a one-day gain of $2.67 (3.21%). Shares of Walmart, Target's chief competitor, were selling for a really measly 12¢ forty years ago. Today Walmart shares lost 41¢ to close at $95.67.

Wells Fargo blames the job cuts on higher interest rates and a slowdown in refinancing. I would add that the number of people who can't afford to buy a home is steadily increasing. According to the Joint Center For Housing Studies, the percentage of Americans owning homes has declined each year for the past 13 years.

How many times have we wanted to watch a video on YouTube and first had to watch a commercial? We get enough of those on radio and television and in movie theaters. Many of the YouTube ads allow us to skip to the video after five seconds, which, of course, probably 99.9% of us do. Advertisers pay extra for ads that we can't skip and we're going to be getting more of them. Oh, joy. At least they can't stop us from turning the speakers off until the ads finish playing.

I would never buy a self-driving car. I don't think they're safe and, even if they were, I wouldn't want to own a car that could go on vacation without me.
