Disney under fire for selling shirt with negative message to young girls

Disney is facing controversy after mom Emma Palmer took to Facebook to express her outrage and disapproval over a shirt she found at a Disney Store. In her post, Palmer argued the shirt — which has an image of Cinderella's shoe, some hearts and the words "Shoes speak louder than words" — sends a negative message to young girls.

"This is just everything that is wrong with messaging to girls in a nutshell," she wrote. "It's 2018. Surely it is widely recognized that the content of your mind and words you speak are WAAAAAY more important than your f****** shoes!" Many people who commented agreed with Palmer. She asked for the product to be pulled but it is still available for sale on the official ShopDisney website.

Disney admits to darkening white actors’ skin for Aladdin, sparking outrage

The latest news surrounding Disney’s upcoming live-action Aladdin movie is anything but magical. The mass media company admitted to BBC Newsbeat that extras working on the movie’s set in Longcross, England, were darkened with makeup so they could "blend" into the scenes for the movie. Extra Kaushal Odedra, who said he witnessed the practice himself and spoke to a number of outlets on the subject, told The Times that Disney’s actions speak volumes. "Disney is sending out a message that your skin colour, your identity, your life experiences amount to nothing that can’t be powdered on and washed off," he said. Odedra noted that he saw around 20 "very fair-skinned" actors waiting in line to have their skin tanned, including a white actor he had recognized who was tanned to play a palace guard.

People across social media criticized Disney for the move. Actor Kal Penn denounced Disney for putting "100 people in brownface." Samar Ziadat, art historian and co-founder of online magazine Dardishi, tweeted, "Disney admits to darkening the skin of white extras in their live-action Aladdin to make them look Arab. It’s 2018. How about hire some Arab actors? We deserve better representation than this." Disney released a statement defending itself by saying the practice was done in only a "handful of instances."

Disney CEO Robert Iger sees compensation decline to $36.3 million in 2017

Robert Iger, the chief executive of the Walt Disney Co., saw his total compensation decline 17% in the recently concluded fiscal year to $36.3 million, according to the company’s latest proxy statement filed Friday to the Securities and Exchange Commission. The drop from last year’s $43.9 million was due in part to a smaller cash bonus to Iger that Disney said was the result of an "absence of growth" in the fiscal year.

Iger, who is 66 and has extended his contract with Disney to 2021, received a base salary of $2.5 million, a performance-based bonus of $15.2 million and equity-based compensation (including stock options) valued at $17.3 million. His compensation also includes sums for personal air travel, security and matched charitable contributions. Last year, Iger’s performance-based cash bonus totaled $20 million.

Minnie Mouse finally gets her Hollywood Walk of Fame star

It was Minnie Mouse Day in Hollywood. The iconic Disney character received the 2,627th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Monday, a "brief 40 years after Mickey got his star," according to avid Minnie Mouse fan and American Idol judge Katy Perry, who was among those presenting the animated star with the honor.

This year marks the 90th anniversary of the release of 1928’s Steamboat Willie, the first of Minnie Mouse’s more than 70 animated films. Her co-star in that movie, Mickey Mouse, received a star in 1978 for the film’s 50th anniversary and was also on hand at Monday’s ceremony. In addition to Mickey and Perry, model Heidi Klum and Walt Disney Co. Chairman and CEO Bob Iger also joined in the festivities.

According to a report in the Sunday edition of Japanese newspaper Mainichi Shimbun, Oriental Land Company, which owns and operates Tokyo Disney Resort, is making plans for a third park. The sky- and space-themed park, Tokyo DisneySky, would feature a jet plane simulator and moving walkways and could open as early as 2022. Disneyland and Disney's California Adventure raise prices at least once a year. As of February 10, 2018, admission to either park on a "low demand day" is $99, up from $97. "Regular demand day" admission rose from $110 to $117 and "peak demand day" admission rose from $124 to $135. The cheapest -- "cheapest"? Hah! -- annual pass is now $729, an increase of $110. The Signature annual pass which includes free parking is now $999, an increase of $150.

Ticket prices at Walt Disney World will increase today. The cost increase will vary from park to park as well as which day since Disney offers a three-tiered system for peak, regular and value tickets. Annual passes, including those for Florida residents, are also on the rise. At the gate, a one-day regular Magic Kingdom ticket will cost $119, a $4 increase. A value ticket will cost $109, a $2 increase, while a peak ticket will now cost $129, a $5 increase. For the other three parks — Epcot, Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom — a one-day regular ticket is now $114, a $7 increase. A value ticket will cost $102, a $3 increase, while a peak ticket is $122, a $3 increase. Parking per car will also increase to $22 a day, up from $20, and preferred parking $45, up from $40.
