Disney and Cirque du Soleil partner for new attraction

When one show closes, another must open — and that’s exactly the plan for two of the world’s largest entertainment giants. Cirque du Soleil and Walt Disney Parks & Resorts have a new show in the works. The highly anticipated production will take the place of La Nouba, which has played at Disney Springs at Walt Disney World in Orlando since 1998. The yet unnamed production "will celebrate Disney’s legacy of storytelling in Cirque du Soleil’s signature way, with a tribute to the one-of-a-kind craftsmanship that makes Disney so extraordinary," the companies announced in a joint statement.
An opening date has yet to be announced. Executives at both companies have kept quiet about the project since La Nouba’s closing was announced in the spring.

New security measures at Walt Disney World hotels

Beginning with the Grand Floridian, Polynesian and Contemporary Resorts, Walt Disney World hotels will no longer provide guests with "Do Not Disturb" signs to put on their doors. The signs will be replaced with "Room Occupied" signs that will notify cast members that guests are in the rooms. However, these guests will be "disturbed" at some point, as it will now be required that a Disney employee enter their hotel room at least once a day to ensure guest safety.
Disney is not publicly stating why they are making the change but it may be a response to the mass shooting that happened in Las Vegas earlier this year. The three resorts are quite tall and offer similar vantage points of crowded guest areas as well as Walt Disney World transportation such as monorails, buses and watercraft. The changes are expected to roll out to other Walt Disney World Resort Hotels in the coming weeks.

Warner Bros. beat Disney to the $2 billion box-office mark this year -- but then came Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Disney's 2017 gross is now at $2.27 billion. Warner Bros. has grossed $2.02 billion. The highest-grossing movie in the US and Canada this year was the live-action Beauty & The Beast. (Disney is working on several other live-action versions of their animated classics, including Mulan, Dumbo, Pinocchio, The Lion King, The Little Mermaid and Snow White & The Seven Dwarfs. There was a big power outage at Disneyland on Wednesday and it lasted for several hours. All the rides in Fantasyland and Mickey's Toon Town stopped running and then the lines at the other rides got really long. People were very upset.
In 2019, Disney will release, in chronological order, Captain Marvel, a live-action Dumbo, The Avengers 4, a live-action Aladdin, Toy Story 4, Spider-Man: Homecoming 2, a live-action The Lion King, Frozen 2 and Star Wars: Episode IX. Next year will bring another Avengers, another Incredibles, another Ant-Man, another Mary Poppins and another Wreck-It Ralph. I'm rewriting the Full House theme song for Disney: "Whatever happened to orig-i-nal-i-teeeee....."

In Disney's 2002 animated film Lilo & Stitch, Dr. Jumba Jookiba's genetic creation was known as "Experiment 626." The little blue creature escaped and crash-landed on earth, where he was found by Lilo, who decided to call him Stitch. Thus, the name -- and premise -- of Stitch's Great Escape is inaccurate. I went on this attraction only once and that was enough. I will not miss it.

Stitch’s Great Escape. a theater-in-the-round experience featuring the escaped alien Stitch, opened in the Tomorrowland area of Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom in 2004 and is commonly regarded as one of the park's worst attractions. In fact, after analyzing the opinions of 126,000 children in 2016, the site Touring Plans found that Stitch’s Great Escape came in dead last among kids’ most-liked attractions. However, despite the ride’s unpopularity, Stitch has hung around at the Magic Kingdom for nearly 14 years, overstaying his welcome and finally being put on a seasonal schedule in 2016.
For the past two years, the attraction has run only when the Magic Kingdom is extremely busy, such as during the holiday week between Christmas and New Year’s when families flock to the parks. Now, it seems that it may finally close for good. The attraction is rumored to be closing on January 6.
