Disneyland visitors who explore the new Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge expansion that opens next year will be invited to belly up to a dimly lit Star Wars-inspired cantina where — for the first time in the park — they can order alcoholic drinks. New artist renderings released on the Disneyland blog today show a dark tavern where Stormtroopers, bounty hunters, smugglers and other alien travelers crowd around a bar that serves various concoctions. The post says the tavern, dubbed Oga’s Cantina, will serve "libations for adults."
The libations will include pre-mixed alcoholic drinks, a significant development at the attraction because Disneyland has never sold booze to park visitors, except to members of the private Club 33, an exclusive dinner club at Disneyland’s New Orleans Square. Park goers who order drinks in the cantina won’t be allowed to take them out into the park. Walt Disney, who died in 1966, opposed the sale of alcohol in his parks, saying he felt the introduction of booze would ruin the family atmosphere.

Moving people around a theme park is like one of those slide-tray puzzles. You move from one place to any other space that is clear, in the hope that eventually you will get to wherever you actually wanted to go. Except that at Disneyland, there’s often not that extra, empty space you need to move around the board. It’s gridlock. Disney's latest step to address its overcrowding problem is to remove seating in several places around the park, in an attempt to improve guest flow.
People go to Disneyland to experience Disneyland, not just to ride Pirates Of The Caribbean or Space Mountain or the Haunted Mansion. Disneyland is a place where you can hang out, enjoy a snack, take in the ambience and relax in a beautiful setting. Of course, most of us do that by grabbing a space on a bench and sitting down. With fewer places to sit, more of Disneyland’s spaces in between its various rides and shows are becoming avenues instead of destinations. With a limited amount of space to accommodate ever-growing crowds, perhaps it must be that way.

In June, Disney shut down the Rainforest Café, ESPN Zone, AMC theater and Earl of Sandwich and planned to tear them down and start construction on a 700-room luxury hotel.
