JCPenney recently announced the closure of an additional 27 stores and now Tommy Hilfiger will close its flagship store on Fifth Avenue. Ralph Lauren, Gap and Lord & Taylor have also shuttered their flagship New York stores. Huge flagship stores are losing their relevance and their appeal. We can probably blame most of that on online shopping.

The new, smaller Sears Home & Life stores will sell tools, appliances and mattresses but no clothing or cosmetics. Sears/Kmart executive Peter Boutros refused to comment on sales projections for the new stores. Considering how many hundreds of Sears and Kmart stores have gone out of business, I don't blame him.

After a year of remodeling, this Sears in Chicago reopened as a much smaller, more "contemporary" store. CEO Eddie Lampert touted it as an example of Sears' "new direction." The new direction turned out to be just another disaster for the struggling chain.

Pretty soon there will be no more Sears and no more Kmarts. They will join Kress, Gimbels, Newberry, McCrory, Hills, Hechts, Bullocks, Goldsmith's, Wanamaker's, Two Guys, May Co., F.W. Woolworth, Montgomery Ward and Linens 'n' Things in the department store graveyard.

At one time, there were more than 3,500 Sears stores and more than 2,300 Kmarts in the United States. Next year, after the latest round of closures, there will be approximately 200 Sears and 100 Kmarts. It's time to administer last rites.

Another round of closings. At one time there were 5,800 Sears & Kmarts in the US. A decade ago there were 3,900. As of February 2020, only 182 will remain. Sears is also considering selling its DieHard batteries brand and other assets.

Under the Fair Labor Standards Act, employees are to be paid overtime for any work of more than 40 hours in a week. Employees who work only 40 hours a week are not entitled to extra pay on Saturdays, Sundays or holidays. Many retailers do pay overtime for holiday work and 10% extra for Sunday work – but Walmart is not among them. If this boycott gains strength and cuts into Walmart's profits, that could change.

Gymboree, Radio Shack, Payless Shoes and American Apparel each went out of business after going through two bankruptcies. Next year, Sears could join them, forcing women in their 60s and 70s to look elsewhere for drab, outdated, no-longer-fashionable clothing.
