From 1959 until 1972 when Motown moved from Detroit to Los Angeles, various combinations of the 15 studio musicians known as the Funk Brothers played, without credit, on every Motown/Tamla/Gordy recording. Their pay: $10 an hour.

Eddie Willis, one of the last Funk Brothers, dies at 82
Detroit Free Press, Aug 20 2018 3:28 PM

Guitarist Eddie Willis, who played on many of the best-known Motown hits from the Detroit era, died this morning at his home in Gore Springs, Mississippi. He was 82 and had been suffering complications from a childhood bout with polio. With the death of Willis, only guitarist Joe Messina remains from the seminal core lineup of the Funk Brothers, the revered Motown house band that largely worked in obscurity. The group's legacy was brought to wider prominence with the 2002 award-winning documentary Standing In The Shadows Of Motown.
