North Korea issues warning: Threat of nuclear test should be taken literally

The North Korean foreign minister's warning of a possible atmospheric nuclear test over the Pacific Ocean should be taken literally, a senior North Korean official told CNN in an interview aired today "The foreign minister is very well aware of the intentions of our supreme leader, so I think you should take his words literally," Ri Yong Pil, a senior diplomat in North Korea's Foreign Ministry, told CNN.

North Korean Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho said last month Pyongyang may consider conducting "the most powerful detonation" of a hydrogen bomb over the Pacific Ocean amid rising tensions with the United States. The minister made the comment after U.S. President Donald Trump warned that the United States would "totally destroy" North Korea, which has been working to develop nuclear-tipped missiles capable of hitting America, if it threatened the United States. In spite of the bellicose rhetoric and repeated U.S. warnings that all options, including military ones, are on the table, White House officials say Trump is looking for a peaceful resolution of the standoff.

Seventy-one can be considered old. And how many times has Trump insulted Kim by calling him "Rocket Man"? Trying hard to be his friend? Really? Such hypocrisy!

North Korea says U.S. to blame for 'worst ever situation'

North Korea complained to the United Nations on Monday about joint military exercises by the United State and South Korea, describing it as "the worst ever situation" because U.S. nuclear war equipment had been deployed ready to strike. In a letter to U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, North Korean U.N. Ambassador Ja Song Nam said the United States was "running amok for war exercises by introducing nuclear war equipment in and around the Korean Peninsula."

Three U.S. aircraft carrier strike groups have been involved in the joint exercise in the Western Pacific in a rare show of force as President Donald Trump visits Asia. The last time three U.S. carrier strike groups exercised together in the Western Pacific was in 2007. South Korea has said the joint drill, due to finish on Tuesday, was in response to North Korean nuclear and missile provocations and to show any such developments by Pyongyang can be repelled with "overwhelming force." However, Ja said Washington was to blame for escalating tensions and accused the U.N. Security Council of ignoring "the nuclear war exercises of the United States who is hell-bent on bringing catastrophic disaster to humanity."

North Korean state newspaper announces 'death sentence' for Trump

A North Korean state newspaper has issued a death sentence for U.S. President Donald Trump after he insulted Kim Jong-Un during his recent trip to Asia. An editorial in the ruling party's newspaper Rodong Sinmun declared Trump a "criminal" and said their nation's people had sentenced him to death because of the unflattering way he talks about their country and their supreme leader. "The worst crime for which he can never be pardoned is that he dared to malignantly hurt the dignity of the supreme leadership," the editorial read. "He should know that he is just a hideous criminal sentenced to death by the Korean people."

The scathing article was in response to comments Trump made during his recent visit to South Korea, where he condemned the North's "cruel dictatorship" in a speech to South Korea’s National Assembly. During his address, Trump called North Korea "a hell that no person deserves" and warned that "the weapons you are acquiring are not making you safer. They are putting your regime in grave danger. Every step you take down this dark path increases the peril you face." Do not underestimate us and do not try us. We will defend our common security, our shared prosperity and our sacred liberty."

The editorial also took aim at the fact that Trump skipped a planned visit to the demilitarized border zone between North and South Korea due to inclement weather. "It wasn’t the weather. He was just too scared to face the glaring eyes of our troops," the article said. Days after his South Korea visit, Trump again insulted Kim Jong-Un, calling the dictator "short and fat" in a controversial tweet.

North Korea rules out negotiations on nuclear weapons

North Korea today ruled out negotiations with Washington as long as joint U.S-South Korea military exercises continue and said Pyongyang’s atomic weapons program would remain as a deterrent against a U.S. nuclear threat. Han Tae Song, North Korea’s ambassador to the United Nations in Geneva, told Reuters, “As long as there is continuous hostile policy against my country by the U.S. and as long as there are continued war games at our doorstep, then there will not be negotiations."

U.S. nuclear general says he would resist 'illegal' Trump strike order

The top U.S. nuclear commander said today that he would resist President Donald Trump if he ordered an "illegal" launch of nuclear weapons. Air Force General John Hyten, commander of the U.S. Strategic Command, told an audience at the Halifax International Security Forum in Nova Scotia that he had given a lot of thought to what he would say if he received such an order. "I think some people think we’re stupid," Hyten said in response to a question about such a scenario. "We’re not stupid people. We think about these things a lot. When you have this responsibility, how do you not think about it?"

Hyten, who is responsible for overseeing the U.S. nuclear arsenal, explained the process that would follow such a command: "As head of StratCom, I provide advice to the president. He will tell me what to do. And if it’s illegal, I‘m going to say, 'Mr. President, that’s illegal.' He’s going to say, 'What would be legal?' And we’ll come up with options, with a mix of capabilities to respond to whatever the situation is, and that’s the way it works. It’s not that complicated."

Hyten said running through scenarios of how to react in the event of an illegal order was standard practice and added: "If you execute an unlawful order, you will go to jail. You could go to jail for the rest of your life.” Hyten’s remarks. came after questions by U.S. senators, including Democrats and Trump’s fellow Republicans, about Trump’s authority to wage war, use nuclear weapons and enter into or end international agreements, amid concern that tensions over North Korea’s nuclear and missile programs could lead to hostilities.
