Twenty-five major wildfires are raging throughout California. The largest is the August Complex, a merger of 38 smaller fires that were caused by lightning strikes. It is spread across six northern California counties, has burned 970,563 acres (1,517 square miles) and is 51% contained.

In October, a fire burned 13,400 acres in Silverado Canyon in Orange County. Two nights ago, another fire broke out in the same canyon. It has now burned 6,200 acres and is only 10% contained.

Ten major wildfires are burning in northern California. The largest is the Beckwourth Complex Fire, a combination of two lightning-caused fires 50 miles north of Truckee. It has burned 84,000 acres and is only 8% contained. Nearly 200 square miles of Plumas National Forest are now closed and several campgrounds and hundreds of homes are under mandatory evacuation orders.

The Dixie Fire has burned 191,000 acres (298 square miles) in Plumas and Butte Counties and is only 21% contained. The Tamarack Fire southeast of Lake Tahoe was sparked by lightning July 4. It has burned 67,000 acres (104 square miles) and destroyed 25 structures and is 27% contained..

California's six largest wildfires have all occurred in the past three years. The Dixie Fire, the state's sixth-largest wildfire, has now burned 362,000 acres (566 square miles) and destroyed the small town of Greenville and is only 35% contained. The fire began July 14. The cause is not yet known but a Pacific Gas & Electric spokesman said the fire may have been sparked when a tree fell on one of its power lines. Several huge wildfires, including the 2019 Kincade fire in Sonoma County, have been caused by downed power lines. Whatever the cost, California's power lines need to be placed underground!

The wildfire raged for three months and burned 1,032,648 acres (1,613) square miles). It is the largest wildfire in California history. The Dixie Fire is now second-largest. It has burned 464,000 acres (725 square miles). Four people are unaccounted for.
