Yosemite National Park is still open -- but I wouldn't recommend visiting right now unless you don't mind breathing smoke. The fire continues to grow and is only 5% contained.

Another day, another new fire. This one has burned 80 acres and is only 20% contained. Lompoc -- the name is a Native American word meaning "lagoon" -- is known as "the flower seed capital of the world" and is home to Vandenberg Air Force Base. I've been to the flower fields there and I hope this fire keeps its distance.

Are they employing drone technology in detecting the fires before they spread too much? Wouldn't that be useful?

Cal Fire has warned people to never fly hobby drones above fires because firefighters fly air tankers and helicopters at low altitudes and are forced to ground the aircraft rather than risk collisions with drones. In 2016, they started arresting people who fly drones over fires. I agree drones would be useful in detecting paths of fires in inaccessible areas but Cal Fire doesn't use drones for the same reason they forbid private citizens from using them: they interfere with firefighting aircraft. The Corona fire has burned 250 acres and the fire near Yosemite has burned 22,900 acres. And why does the headline say "heat wave coming"? Many parts of California have a year-round heat wave!

More than 30,000 acres have burned and the fire is only 6% contained. California has added a lot of jobs in the past two years and I'm guessing that's because we need so many thousands of firefighters!

As of mid-afternoon, the fire that began ten days ago near Yosemite has burned 33,743 acres and is moving deeper into the Sierra and Stanislaus national forests. Around 3,500 homes and businesses are threatened. This fire could be raging for many weeks.
