According to U.S. Forest Service data, "Nearly 85% of wildfires in the United States are caused by humans. Human-caused fires result from campfires left unattended, the burning of debris, equipment use and malfunctions, negligently discarded cigarettes and intentional acts of arson." The Nixon fire, which has now burned more than eight square miles, was caused by equipment malfunction, namely, a faulty electrical panel.

"There's no crying in baseball" – but there's crying in Ontario. In 1998 this ballpark was named in honor of Joe "Jay" Littleton (1923-2003), a World War II veteran and Ontario resident who played in the Pony/Colt League and American Legion Baseball and was a scout for the Dodgers, Angels and Royals. The ballpark was declared a historic landmark in 2003. Littleton's son Gary plans to rebuild it.
