There was zero containment Sunday of the Caldor fire, which has charred nearly 154 square miles of trees and brush in the northern Sierra Nevada after breaking out August 14. The cause is under investigation.

KNP Complex fire burns within mile of Giant Forest, threatening towering Sequoia preserve
Los Angeles Times, Sep 15 2021 3:26 PM

The KNP Complex fire, composed of the lightning-sparked Paradise and Colony fires which ignited Thursday amid regional thunderstorms, has ballooned to 7,039 acres with 0% containment. As it exploded rapidly through drought-stricken, bug-killed trees, the fire forced the closure of Sequoia National Park and the evacuation of employees living within it. The flames are about a mile from the famed Giant Forest, the largest concentration of towering giant sequoias in the park and home to the 275-foot General Sherman tree, considered the world’s largest tree.

Havilah, a mining town in Kern County, was founded in 1864 and took its name from Genesis 2:11, which describes the Pishon river as winding "through the entire land of Havilah, where there is gold." Most of the town has been destroyed by the Borel Fire which began July 24, 2024, when a motorist drove off Highway 178 into a canyon. He died in the crash and the car caught fire. The resulting wildfire has burned 89 square miles and is 0% contained.
