    Spencer for Hire!

I listened to Tyler's Take last night on his radio show. Tyler's special guest was Jim Cady, CEO of Slacker.

It was a more tepid Tyler last night. But hey, he had set the bar pretty high after last week's performance. It would have been very difficult to duplicate the blistering, profanity laced, tirade that had been delivered just one week earlier.

In fact, aside from a single scatological reference to urination, I do not recall a single cuss word being uttered last night by Tyler during his radio show.

A couple other points about Tyler's radio show last night . . .

If it wasn't clear before, it should be abundantly clear now that a war of words is underway, a three-way kabuki dance if you will.

Bob Pittman of Clear Channel refers to Internet Radio services as "music lockers" or "digital playlists."

And Mel Karmazin has correctly highlighted the distinction between "curated" and "uncurated" music.

This has lead Jim Cady to try and rebrand slacker as a "personalized music service" with "curated" content.

And then on March 15 at Lazard, Mel delivering a zinger as only Mel can, "and then you have all of this Internet stuff”

    80 Million Registered Users?

Jim Cady calls bullsh*t on Tyler's radio show!

ok, well that's not exactly what he said . . . but when Tyler asked Cady about Pandora's 80 million registered users, Cady replied that "it's not a number we pay attention to" and then went on to detail the reasons why it is a dubious claim (basically, the exact same reasons members of this forum have been posting here for months).

But anyway, Jim Cady can't be too harsh in his assessment of "our friends at Pandora" as he repeatedly referred to them last night during Tyler's radio show . . . I mean, afterall, with a media pump job at their backs, Pandora will be flush with IPO money that could be used to leverage a "friendly" acquisition of a weaker sister.

It will be interesting to see if Tyler continues to cite 80 million registered users in future Pandora articles.

Also during Tyler's radio show last night, when asked about Slacker's total user-base, being a privately owned company, Cady "guided" to 25-30 Million users and "guided" to paid-tier subscribers "in the 100's of 1,000's" and "growing at a good clip."

So take the upper end, say 750,000 paid subscribers and use 27,500,000 as total user base:

    750,000/27,500,000 = 2.73%

or, if ya wanna get really crazy . . . say 999,999/25,000,000 = 4% . . . woo-boy, pop the cork and break out the Merlot!
