Brendan Hunt found guilty of threatening to assault or murder members of Congress
CNN, Apr 29 2021 1:04 AM ET
Brendan Hunt, who allegedly threatened the lives of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, now-Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, was found guilty of one count of threatening to assault or murder US officials by a jury in Brooklyn federal court on Wednesday, according to the Eastern District of New York.
Federal prosecutors charged and tried Hunt, the son of retired New York City family court judge John Hunt. Brendan Hunt will be sentenced in June and faces up to 10 years in prison. Hunt had posted videos of himself at his Queens home in January discussing the January 6 riot at the US Capitol, threatening to kill Senators and encouraging others to go back to the Capitol on Inauguration Day and take their guns. He took the stand in his own defense on Tuesday, telling the court that he didn't really mean what he said in videos and messaging apps about killing elected officials. Hunt testified that he didn't think his rhetoric about killing elected officials could bear real penal consequences because he'd seen the prevalence of "kill Trump" rhetoric, especially from celebrities.

At Fox News Channel, a.k.a. the Trump Cheerleading Channel, the program hosts worship Trump almost as much as he worships himself and they helped spread his lies that he won the 2020 Presidential election but it was "rigged" and "stolen" from him. Trump's blindly loyal supporters believed the lies and obeyed Trump's call to march to the Capitol on January 6 and "fight like hell." A sleazy lawyer for one of the rioters has come up with an unusual defense tactic:

Donald Trump insisted he won the 2020 Presidential election (which he lost) and claimed the election was "rigged" and "fraudulent" (which it was not). His blindly loyal supporters believed his lie that the election victory was "stolen" from him. They obeyed Trump's command to "march to the Capitol and "fight like hell or you won't have a country anymore." Miller served as acting Secretary of Defense from November 9, 2020, until January 20, 2021. In March, he spoke with Vice.com: "Would anybody have marched on the Capitol and tried to overrun the Capitol without the President's speech? I think it's pretty much definitive that wouldn't have happened." Now he'll be testifying before Congress. It is expected that he will again blame Trump for inciting the riot – and defend the slow response by the military.
Pentagon chief during January 6 riot defends military response
HuffPost, May 11 2021 4:03 PM ET
President Donald Trump’s acting defense secretary during the January 6 Capitol riots plans to tell Congress that he was concerned in the days before the insurrection that sending troops to the building would fan fears of a military coup and could cause a repeat of the deadly Kent State shootings, according to a copy of prepared remarks obtained by The Associated Press.
Christopher Miller’s testimony is aimed at defending the Pentagon’s response to the chaos of the day and rebutting broad criticism that military forces were too slow to arrive even as pro-Trump rioters violently breached the building and stormed inside. He casts himself as a deliberate leader who was determined that the military have only limited involvement, a perspective he says was shaped by criticism of the aggressive response to the civil unrest that roiled American cities months earlier, as well as decades-old episodes that ended in violence.

‘I was there’: Mitt Romney sets record straight on January 6 Insurrection
The Utah Senator responded to House Republicans attempting to rewrite history just months after the violent attack.
HuffPost, May 13 2021 2:27 PM ET
Utah Republican Senator Mitt Romney says the violent January 6 insurrection at the US Capitol was no ordinary “tourist visit,” as one Republican Congressman claimed this week when describing the thousands of Donald Trump supporters who stormed the building in an attempt to prevent Joe Biden from becoming President. “I was there,” Romney told HuffPost today. “What happened was a violent effort to interfere with and prevent the Constitutional order of installing a new President. As such, it was an insurrection against the Constitution that resulted in severe property damage, severe injuries and death." Romney was a direct witness to the attack, which resulted in five deaths and more than 100 officers injured.

It would be nice of an increasing number of Retrumplicans would start speaking out against Trump's lies and their party's efforts to downplay the violence of the January 6 Capitol insurrection and paint the rioters as "tourists" and "victims" – but, unfortunately, almost every Congressional Retrumplican worships at the altar of Donald Trump. They figuratively kneel before him and kiss his ring. He continues to rule the Retrumplican party with an iron grip.
Republican Congressman calls out 'bogus' claims by GOP colleagues downplaying Capitol riot
CNN, May 16 2021 11:04 M ET
Republican Representative Fred Upton today called out an effort by some of his GOP colleagues to downplay the Capitol insurrection, saying their "bogus" claims about the deadly attack are evidence of a need to establish a bipartisan commission to investigate the incident. "It's absolutely bogus. You know, I was there. I watched a number of the folks walk down to the White House and then back. I have a balcony on my office. So I saw them go down. I heard the noise, the flash bangs. I smelled some of the gas as it moved my way," the Michigan Congressman told CNN's Dana Bash on State Of The Union when asked about comments made by several Congressional Republicans last week who attempted to rewrite what happened on January 6.
The comments from the longtime Congressman come as a rift in his party grows between members who are offering an inaccurate account of the insurrection and those who have consistently condemned the violence on January 6 while also casting blame on former President Donald Trump and his 2020 election lies for the attack.

On January 13, Retrumplican House leader Kevin McCarthy declared, "The President bears responsibility for Wednesday's attack on Congress by mob rioters. He should have immediately denounced the mob when he saw what was unfolding. These facts require immediate action from President Trump: accept his share of responsibility, quell the brewing unrest and ensure that President-elect Biden is able to successfully begin his term. And the President's immediate action also deserves Congressional action, which is why I think a fact-finding commission and a censure resolution would be prudent.."
That was then, this is now. McCarthy has announced his opposition to a bill which would establish a bipartisan commission to investigate the January 6 insurrection. McCarthy is hopeful of becoming Speaker of the House if Retrumplicans regain control of the House of Representatives in 2022. He knows he can't afford to lose Trump's support. After all, Trump continues to rule the Retrumplican party with an iron grip.

Retrumplican Kevin McCarthy is opposed to a bill which would establish a bipartisan commission to investigate the January 6 Capitol insurrection. He says the proposal is "driven solely by politics and Nancy Pelosi." Retrumplican Mitch McConnell, who in January said Trump "provoked" the riot and "bears responsibility," is also opposed, saying the proposal is "slanted and unbalanced" and "unnecessary." Senate majority leader Chuck Schumer says Americans will see whether Republicans "stand on the side of the truth or on the side of Donald Trump’s big lie.” Chuck, we already know the answer. Trump rules the Retrumplican party with an iron grip.
McConnell turns Senate Republicans against January 6 commission
Politico, May 19 2021 3:07 PM
Mitch McConnell’s opposition to a bipartisan proposal to independently investigate the Capitol insurrection is turning GOP senators against the bill, potentially dooming its prospects in the Senate. The Senate minority leader informed Republicans today that he is opposed to the 9/11-style commission that would probe the deadly January 6 riot, as envisioned by the House. And in the wake of McConnell’s remarks, Senator Mike Rounds (R-South Dakota) – who had expressed support on Tuesday for the idea – said he could no longer back the commission in its current form.

The bill to establish a bipartisan commission to investigate the January 6 Trump-incited insurrection at the Capitol has passed the House of Representatives. Now it has to pass the Senate. That means Democrats will need the support of at least ten Republicans. Even if all seven Republicans who voted to impeach Trump in February agree to support the bill – which does not seem likely – the Democrats will still need the support of three more Republicans – which really doesn't seem likely..
Analysis: House GOP revolt against Trump sets up tough Senate battle on January 6 probe
Stephen Collinson, CNN, May 20 2021 12:06 AM ET
Thirty-five House Republicans chose the truth and American democracy over Donald Trump's personality cult. Now their Senate colleagues face the same battle of conscience over the effort to investigate the Capitol insurrection. The House of Representatives voted on Wednesday to establish an independent bipartisan commission but the bill still has a cliffhanger path ahead as supporters seek votes of 10 Republican Senators needed to usher it into law. It remains an open, if perplexing, question if Republican Senators will stand in the way of an investigation into an armed attack that sent them fleeing for safety.
The revolt of 35 House Republicans against their leader, California Representative Kevin McCarthyThe revolt of 35 House Republicans against their leader, California Rep. Kevin McCarthy – who pushed strongly for the bill's defeat – represents the strongest rebuke yet of the former President from his own party ranks, far more than the 10 Republicans who voted to impeach Trump over the Capitol mob scene. The surprising size of the Republican vote for the commission may indicate the politics of the issue are not yet set in stone and could give some Republicans pause as they consider their position on investigating the insurrection..
Thirty-five Republican votes in favor of the commission represents a small fraction of the overall GOP caucus. A total of 175 Republicans voted against establishing the panel. That sizable vote showed the still-vibrant power of Trump within the party. Those 35 votes of conscience in the House may not be a harbinger of an even more significant revolt against the former President in the Senate.

Thirty-five Republicans joined Democrats in approving a bill to establish an independent bipartisan commission to investigate the January 6 Trump-incited insurrection at the Capitol. Not surprisingly, Trump called the 35 "weak and ineffective." How dare they want Americans to know the truth about the riot! The bill is almost certain to fail to pass in the Senate, where it needs a minimum of 60 votes. Here is another bill which has passed the House and is not likely to pass the Senate:
House narrowly passes $1.9 billion Capitol security bill
CNN, May 20 2021 1:19 PM ET
The House of Representatives voted by a thin margin today to pass a $1.9 billion spending bill to increase security at the US Capitol in response to the deadly January 6 insurrection. The sweeping legislation, introduced by House Appropriations Chairwoman Rosa DeLauro, a Connecticut Democrat, covers a range of priorities, including funding to enhance security across the Capitol grounds as well as provisions to bolster protections and increase preparedness for lawmakers, including at their district offices, and the Capitol Police force.
The final vote was 213-212, with three Democrats voting present and three Democrats voting no. The narrow vote underscores how House Democratic leadership has little room for error in passing legislative priorities given the size of its current majority. Now that the House has approved the bill, it will need to pass the Senate before it can go to President Joe Biden's desk.

Letter from Terry Walker of Sylmar in today's Los Angeles Times:
"The only reason I can think of why McCarthy and other Republicans are opposed to the January 6 commission is that they believe Trump would be found to have engaged in some kind of conspiracy or worse. If there was even a chance of public exoneration, the Republicans would be clamoring for a commission, if not demanding it. The fact that they are not tells you everything you need to know."
And from D.H. Sloan of Los Angeles:
"McConnell and McCarthy previously signaled that they might support a bipartisan commission on the January 6 insurrection. Now they do not. Still under the control of Donald Trump, they are evidently afraid of retribution by the former President and his base. Republican lawmakers want to 'move on' from January 6 but the stain of that day will be in the history books forever. Are they afraid we will learn of their party members' culpability?"

Trump responds to insurrection lawsuit by claiming immunity while he was President
CNN, May 25 2021 2:18 PM ET
Donald Trump's attorney defended the ex-President's incendiary speech on January 6, saying he is protected under the First Amendment and had "absolute immunity" while he was President to contest the election. .The argument is the first time Trump has formally defended his actions in court since the insurrection and reflects his continued push to his supporters that he did nothing wrong and was robbed of a second term in office.
Trump argues in DC District Court that his bully pulpit message to his supporters at the political rally on January 6 – encouraging them to oppose Congress certifying the vote – was a Constitutionally protected act of the Presidency. "While holding that office, former President Trump was free to advocate for the appointment and certification of electors, just as he was entitled to advocate for the passage or defeat of a Constitutional amendment or the reconsideration of a Congressional act over his veto even though the President does not directly participate in those congressional acts," Trump's private attorney Jesse Binnall wrote in response to a lawsuit from Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell seeking to hold him accountable for the insurrection. "The claims against former President Trump directly contravene the absolute immunity conveyed on the President by the Constitution as a key principle of separation of powers."
