Disney and Cirque du Soleil partner for new attraction
Fox News, Dec 20 2017
When one show closes, another must open — and that’s exactly the plan for two of the world’s largest entertainment giants. Cirque du Soleil and Walt Disney Parks & Resorts have a new show in the works. The highly anticipated production will take the place of La Nouba, which has played at Disney Springs at Walt Disney World in Orlando since 1998. The yet unnamed production "will celebrate Disney’s legacy of storytelling in Cirque du Soleil’s signature way, with a tribute to the one-of-a-kind craftsmanship that makes Disney so extraordinary," the companies announced in a joint statement.
An opening date has yet to be announced. Executives at both companies have kept quiet about the project since La Nouba’s closing was announced in the spring.

Prepare to be "disturbed."
New security measures at Walt Disney World hotels
WDW News Today, Dec 22 2017
Beginning with the Grand Floridian, Polynesian and Contemporary Resorts, Walt Disney World hotels will no longer provide guests with "Do Not Disturb" signs to put on their doors. The signs will be replaced with "Room Occupied" signs that will notify cast members that guests are in the rooms. However, these guests will be "disturbed" at some point, as it will now be required that a Disney employee enter their hotel room at least once a day to ensure guest safety.
Disney is not publicly stating why they are making the change but it may be a response to the mass shooting that happened in Las Vegas earlier this year. The three resorts are quite tall and offer similar vantage points of crowded guest areas as well as Walt Disney World transportation such as monorails, buses and watercraft. The changes are expected to roll out to other Walt Disney World Resort Hotels in the coming weeks.

Warner Bros. beat Disney to the $2 billion box-office mark this year -- but then came Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Disney's 2017 gross is now at $2.27 billion. Warner Bros. has grossed $2.02 billion. The highest-grossing movie in the US and Canada this year was the live-action Beauty & The Beast. (Disney is working on several other live-action versions of their animated classics, including Mulan, Dumbo, Pinocchio, The Lion King, The Little Mermaid and Snow White & The Seven Dwarfs. Whatever happened to "originality"?)

There was a big power outage at Disneyland on Wednesday and it lasted for several hours. All the rides in Fantasyland and Mickey's Toon Town stopped running and then the lines at the other rides got really long. People were very upset.

Next year will bring another Avengers, another Incredibles, another Ant-Man, another Mary Poppins and another Wreck-It Ralph. In Disney's 2002 animated film Lilo & Stitch, Dr. Jumba Jookiba's genetic creation was known as "Experiment 626." The little blue creature escaped and crash-landed on earth, where he was found by Lilo, who decided to call him Stitch. Thus, the name -- and premise -- of Stitch's Great Escape is inaccurate. I went on this attraction only once and that was enough. I will not miss it.
Disney World’s worst attraction may finally be closing for good this week
Travel & Leisure, Jan 3 2018
Stitch’s Great Escape. a theater-in-the-round experience featuring the escaped alien Stitch, opened in the Tomorrowland area of Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom in 2004 and is commonly regarded as one of the park's worst attractions. In fact, after analyzing the opinions of 126,000 children in 2016, the site Touring Plans found that Stitch’s Great Escape came in dead last among kids’ most-liked attractions. However, despite the ride’s unpopularity, Stitch has hung around at the Magic Kingdom for nearly 14 years, overstaying his welcome and finally being put on a seasonal schedule in 2016.
For the past two years, the attraction has run only when the Magic Kingdom is extremely busy, such as during the holiday week between Christmas and New Year’s when families flock to the parks. Now, it seems that it may finally close for good. The attraction is rumored to be closing on January 6.

Hey, Emma, don't you have more important things to worry about?
Disney under fire for selling shirt with negative message to young girls
Houston Chronicle, Jan 6 2018 3:41 PM
Disney is facing controversy after mom Emma Palmer took to Facebook to express her outrage and disapproval over a shirt she found at a Disney Store. In her post, Palmer argued the shirt — which has an image of Cinderella's shoe, some hearts and the words "Shoes speak louder than words" — sends a negative message to young girls.
"This is just everything that is wrong with messaging to girls in a nutshell," she wrote. "It's 2018. Surely it is widely recognized that the content of your mind and words you speak are WAAAAAY more important than your f****** shoes!" Many people who commented agreed with Palmer. She asked for the product to be pulled but it is still available for sale on the official ShopDisney website.

"A whole new world.......and a whole new skin color."
Disney admits to darkening white actors’ skin for Aladdin, sparking outrage
The Huffington Post, Jan 09 2018 2:27 PM
The latest news surrounding Disney’s upcoming live-action Aladdin movie is anything but magical. The mass media company admitted to BBC Newsbeat that extras working on the movie’s set in Longcross, England, were darkened with makeup so they could "blend" into the scenes for the movie. Extra Kaushal Odedra, who said he witnessed the practice himself and spoke to a number of outlets on the subject, told The Times that Disney’s actions speak volumes. "Disney is sending out a message that your skin colour, your identity, your life experiences amount to nothing that can’t be powdered on and washed off," he said. Odedra noted that he saw around 20 "very fair-skinned" actors waiting in line to have their skin tanned, including a white actor he had recognized who was tanned to play a palace guard.
People across social media criticized Disney for the move. Actor Kal Penn denounced Disney for putting "100 people in brownface." Samar Ziadat, art historian and co-founder of online magazine Dardishi, tweeted, "Disney admits to darkening the skin of white extras in their live-action Aladdin to make them look Arab. It’s 2018. How about hire some Arab actors? We deserve better representation than this." Disney released a statement defending itself by saying the practice was done in only a "handful of instances."

Disney CEO Robert Iger sees compensation decline to $36.3 million in 2017
Los Angeles Times, Jan 12 2018 4:30 PM
Robert Iger, the chief executive of the Walt Disney Co., saw his total compensation decline 17% in the recently concluded fiscal year to $36.3 million, according to the company’s latest proxy statement filed Friday to the Securities and Exchange Commission. The drop from last year’s $43.9 million was due in part to a smaller cash bonus to Iger that Disney said was the result of an "absence of growth" in the fiscal year.
Iger, who is 66 and has extended his contract with Disney to 2021, received a base salary of $2.5 million, a performance-based bonus of $15.2 million and equity-based compensation (including stock options) valued at $17.3 million. His compensation also includes sums for personal air travel, security and matched charitable contributions. Last year, Iger’s performance-based cash bonus totaled $20 million.

You might grow daft and dizzy trying to come up with 101 dog names that start with D but that is just what the Disney Channel has done for its new animated series 101 Dalmatian Street, inspired by Dodie Smith's 1956 novel and Disney's 1961 One Hundred & One Dalmatians movie. The series, set in modern-day London, will premiere in September 2018. But what happened to traditional Disney animation? It now looks more like Nickelodeon animation!

Minnie Mouse finally gets her Hollywood Walk of Fame star
Los Angeles Times, Jan 23 2018
It was Minnie Mouse Day in Hollywood. The iconic Disney character received the 2,627th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Monday, a "brief 40 years after Mickey got his star," according to avid Minnie Mouse fan and American Idol judge Katy Perry, who was among those presenting the animated star with the honor.
This year marks the 90th anniversary of the release of 1928’s Steamboat Willie, the first of Minnie Mouse’s more than 70 animated films. Her co-star in that movie, Mickey Mouse, received a star in 1978 for the film’s 50th anniversary and was also on hand at Monday’s ceremony. In addition to Mickey and Perry, model Heidi Klum and Walt Disney Co. Chairman and CEO Bob Iger also joined in the festivities.
