McDonald co-founded King Crimson in 1968 and played sax on their debut album, In The Court Of The Crimson King. He co-founded Foreigner in 1976 and was a member for four years, playing guitar, sax, flute and keyboards on the band's first three albums. McDonald also recorded with Ian Lloyd, Steve Hackett and John Wetton and released two solo albums.

Their biggest US hits were Black Is Black, which reached #4 in October 1966, and Bring A Little Lovin', which reached #51 in June 1968.
