German-born Karl Wallenda formed the Great Wallendas in 1922. They performed throughout Europe before moving to the United States and joining the Ringling Brothers/Barnum & Bailey Circus in 1928. Seven generations of Wallendas have performed in various troupes – not all at once, of course.

Mudd began his career in 1953 as a reporter for the Richmond News Leader and radio station WRNL and later worked at WTOP in Washington DC. He was at CBS from 1961 to 1981, then moved to NBC. He also worked at PBS and The History Channel before retiring in 2004.
