After 17 years as lead singer for the Southern gospel group the Statesmen, Jake Hess left in 1963 and formed a new group, the Imperials. Gary McSpadden, a former member of the Oak Ridge Boys, was the baritone. In 1967, McSpadden replaced Danny Gaither in the Bill Gaither Trio. In 1981, McSpadden became an original member of a larger group, the Gaither Vocal Band. He recorded 16 albums as a solo artist and 16 as a member of various groups. He was also a songwriter, television host and church pastor.
