the big Northern California fire is now 25% contained and winds are pushing it northeast into dry grasslands and chapparal. It is one of 12 fires burning in California today. The cause of each of those fires is still unknown.

The Pawnee fire has burned 14,000 acres. The County Fire -- a dumb name, if you ask me -- is growing rapidly and is only 2% contained. California's "fire season" used to be September and October. Now it seems to be March through December.

The name Yolo comes from the Native American word yo-loi, which means "land of rushes." Those rushes, along with grasslands and oak trees, are being destroyed by this fast-moving fire. More than 1,200 firefighters are working to contain it.
