I've been to Idyllwild many times. It's a rural community in the mountains southwest of Palm Springs and gets lots of snow every winter. This latest fire is threatening hundreds of homes -- and it was deliberately set. A man has been arrested for arson. What possesses someone to commit such a destructive act?

The Cranston fire near Idyllwild -- it began east of the Cranston Fire Station -- has now burned 4,700 acres and is only 5% contained. The 32-year-old man arrested yesterday was busier than we initially thought. He's been charged with setting five fires in southwest Riverside County.

Man charged with intentionally starting nine Southern California fires
CBS News, Jul 27 2018 3:12 PM
A 32-year-old man has been charged with intentionally starting nine Southern California fires, including one that has chased thousands of residents from mountain communities. Brandon McGlover of Temecula will be arraigned today on 15 felony counts that carry a potential sentence of life in prison. All nine fires were set Wednesday in the Idyllwild, Anza and Sage areas about 100 miles east of Los Angeles. McGlover was arrested the same day in Hemet after arson investigators linked him to the blazes. One blaze became the Cranston Fire that has grown to 18 square miles in the Idyllwild area of the San Jacinto Mountains and is only about 3% contained.
