(SIRI), said Thursday that the company will roll out an application in the second quarter that will allow satellite radio subscribers to stream its content on the iPhone and iPod Touch. Ê The new offering will allow subscribers to access Sirius XM programming without using satellite technology. Ê Meyer, on a conference call with analysts following the company's fourth-quarter earnings release Tuesday, said the application would make Sirius XM content accessible to an estimated 7 million iPhone users and additional iPod users in the U.S. Ê "This is a large and interesting opportunity that will maintain our subscription-based economics while providing customers with easy access to our content through means other than our traditional satellite-based platform," said Meyer. Ê Plans to develop this application were first made public by the company in December as sales of satellite radio units at consumer electronics retail outlets were plunging amid the slowdown in U.S. consumer spending. Ê Meanwhile, the company's main source of subscriber growth, new auto sales, is also slowing as major auto makers like General Motors Corp. (GM) and Chrysler Corp. are struggling to avoid bankruptcy. (SIRI), said Thursday that the satellite radio company will not provide its customary guidance for subscriber and revenue growth in 2009, but it expects to exceed $300 million in earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization for the year. Ê Frear, on a conference call with analysts, cited the U.S. economic crisis and similar decisions made by other companies in explaining Sirius XM's lack of guidance for the year. On Tuesday, the company reported anemic subscriber growth in the fourth quarter of about 83,000 net new customers. Ê Facing a potential bankruptcy filing in February, Sirius XM struck a deal with Liberty Media Corp., the media conglomerate controlled by John Malone, for $530 million worth of high-interest loans to help the satellite radio company meet its near-term debt obligations. Ê Frear said the company's financing deal with Liberty has been completed. Ê "We have put our 2009 liquidity issues behind us," he said.
