Trump said he would release his taxes when an "audit" is finished. An audit is not a big deal. The IRS or state tax authority selects a few tax returns at random and double-checks the numbers to make sure they're correct. The typical audit takes only a few minutes. And being under an audit does not prevent anyone from publicly releasing his tax returns. And isn't it amazing that Trump's taxes have been under audit ever since he's been in office?
Trump doesn't want to release his tax returns because they will show that he lied about his income, he lied about his debt, he lied about his loans and he lied about his business dealings with other countries. He overinflated his wealth in order to get loans from Deutsche Bank when no other banks would loan him money. He overinflated his wealth so the world would think he's the most successful businessman and deal-maker who ever lived. Remember when Trump bragged that he was "smart" by virtue of not paying federal income taxes?
