No sitting Mayor has ever been elected President of the United States. In fact, New York City Mayor Clinton DeWitt is the only one to even be nominated by a major party. He lost in 1812 to incumbent James Madison. Pete Buttigieg -- no, his name is not pronounced the way you think -- is hopeful of being the first.

On January 18, the Washington Post reported that advisers are encouraging former Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz to run for President as an independent. Two CNN reporters think he actually has a chance of winning. If that should happen, I wonder if he would start putting dozens of White Houses in every major American city. Each one could be located next to a Starbucks.

Speaking today at the US Conference of Mayors in Washington, DC, Joe Biden lamented that America has been "divided into pieces" and said we can not "continue on that path." He believes he could win the support of working-class voters in 2020 but still hasn't announced whether he will run for President. He ran -- and lost -- in 1988 and 2008 and Democratic voters are now embracing (figuratively, not literally) women, minorities and political newcomers. Biden, 76, is evaluating his chances. Meanwhile, another woman has announced her candidacy:

Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, who supports labor rights, universal healthcare, campaign finance reform and the elimination of income inequality, ran for President in 2016 and won 23 primaries and caucuses. Sources say he will run again, as a Democrat, in 2020. If he can win the support of women, blacks and Hispanics, Tulsi and Kamala may as well pack up and go home.

The Democratic party was founded January 8, 1828. Until 2008, every Democratic Presidential nominee was a white man. In 2019, the diversity of the candidates matches the diversity of the party itself -- and what does that say about the chances of Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders? I wonder. By the way, Beto O'Rourke told Politico two days ago that he is "potentially" months away from deciding whether to run.

"The American dream and our American democracy are under attack and on the line like never before," declared California Senator Kamala Harris today, announcing her candidacy for President at a rally in her home town and affirming that she will always "speak with decency and moral clarity, treat all people with dignity and respect, lead with integrity and speak the truth." In other words, she is the complete opposite of Donald Trump. At 7 PM Pacific time tomorrow, January 28, Harris will take part in a televised town hall discussion hosted by CNN's Jake Tapper at Drake University in Des Moines.

Kamala Harris' campaign raised $1.5 million in its first 24 hours. Last night, MSNBC's Rachel Maddow told Harris, "I think there is a good chance you are going to win the nomination. You in a general election fight against Donald Trump would be the funniest thing in the world to cover." "Funniest"? Really?
Russian trolls created thousands of fake social media accounts in 2016 and spread misinformation and pro-Trump, anti-Clinton propaganda. Congressmen and the Department of Defense expect Russia to use "deep fake" technology to create highly realistic, manipulated videos in an effort to influence our 2020 election. I think it's safe to say Russia wants Trump to serve another four years.

Here is another poll which Donald Trump will denounce as "fake." Trump loves himself so much, he can't comprehend, or accept, that millions of Americans don't even like him.
Trump is facing historically bad numbers for re-election in 2020
CNN, Jan 30 2019 6:07 PM ET
President Donald Trump is no stranger to bad poll numbers. His net approval rating (approval rating minus disapproval rating) has consistently been negative. But that figure on its own doesn't necessarily mean Trump will be defeated in 2020. As conservative commentators Newt Gingrich and Hugh Hewitt have correctly pointed out, President Ronald Reagan had similarly low approval ratings at this point in his Presidency before going on to a blowout victory in his 1984 re-election campaign. New polling finds, however, the depth of the opposition against Trump is considerably deeper than it was against Reagan. This suggests Trump could have a much more difficult job turning around his bad ratings than Reagan or really any President in the modern polling era.
An astounding 56% of voters said they would definitely vote against Trump in the 2020 general election, compared with 28% who said they would definitely vote for him and 14% who would consider voting for him, according to an ABC News/Washington Post poll. Anyone who thinks it will be easy for Trump to persuade his doubters is sorely mistaken. A record 47% of Americans already say they believe the Trump Presidency will be unsuccessful. This means Americans don't just disapprove of Trump in the moment but believe they won't ever change their minds about him. That 47% is higher than any poll taken at any point for any Presidency in the last 25 years.

Booker declared, "I believe we can build a country where no one is forgotten, no one is left behind" -- and I couldn't help thinking of this line in Disney's 2002 Lilo & Stitch animated film: "'Ohana' means 'family' and 'family' means nobody gets left behind or forgotten." And isn't it time to quit referring to certain people as "African-Americans"? The term implies they're in a sub-category and not true Americans.

Well, I daresay nobody saw this coming:
Russia's propaganda machine discovers 2020 Democratic candidate Tulsi Gabbard
NBC News, Feb 2 2019 4:03 AM
The Russian propaganda machine that tried to influence the 2016 US election is now promoting the Presidential aspirations of Representative Tulsi Gabbard, a controversial Hawaii Democrat who earlier this month declared her intention to run for President in 2020. An NBC News analysis of the main English-language news sites employed by Russia in its 2016 election meddling shows Gabbard has become a favorite. Several experts who track websites and social media linked to the Kremlin have also seen what they believe may be the first stirrings of an upcoming Russian campaign of support for Gabbard.
Since January 11 when Gabbard announced her intention to run, there have been at least 20 Gabbard stories on three major Moscow-based English-language websites affiliated with or supportive of the Russian government: RT, the Russian-owned TV outlet; Sputnik News, a radio outlet; and Russia Insider, a blog that experts say closely follows the Kremlin line. The CIA has called RT and Sputnik part of "Russia's state-run propaganda machine."
All three sites celebrated Gabbard's announcement, defended her positions on Russia and her 2017 meeting with Syrian President Bashar Al-Assa, and attacked those who have suggested she is a pawn for Moscow. The coverage devoted to Gabbard, both in news and commentary, exceeds that afforded to any of the declared or rumored Democratic candidates despite Gabbard's lack of voter recognition.

The vain, pompous, egotistical, narcissistic blowhard who occupies the White House is ignoring, or dismissing, a recent poll showing 56% of Americans will "definitely not" vote for him in 2020. On CBS' Face The Nation, Trump declared the only way Democrats will win in 2020 is if they impeach him. He then bragged -- falsely -- that "you can't impeach somebody for doing the best job of any President in the history of our country for the first two years." I wonder: How is the weather in Trumpworld?

The Democratic candidates should feel at ease during these debates. Donald Trump won't be on stage following them around while scowling and glaring with his arms crossed like he did during his second debate with Hillary Clinton in 2016. In her book What Happened/, Clinton wrote, "It was incredibly uncomfortable. He was literally breathing down my neck. My skin crawled.”
CNN to host one of the first two 2020 Democratic primary debates
CNN, Feb 24 2019 4:07 PM ET
The Democratic National Committee today announced details for the first two Presidential primary debates of the 2020 cycle, with plans to hold each debate over two consecutive nights in anticipation of a large field of candidates. The first debate will take place in June and the second one in July of 2019. NBC, MSNBC and Telemundo are set to partner on the June debate and CNN is set to host the July event. Each debate will feature randomized lineups drawn from a maximum of 20 qualifying candidates. A total of 12 Presidential primary debates are planned during the 2020 cycle. The exact dates and locations of the debates were not announced.

In his State Of The Union address, Trump declared that "America will never be a socialist country." A front-page story in today's Los Angeles Times says "the S-word, socialism, is the preferred weapon" of Trump and Republicans as they focus on the 2020 election. Bernie Sanders? Socialist. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez? Socialist. The "Green New Deal"? Socialist. Political experts say Trump in 2020 will do the same as he did in 2016: demonize his opponent, whoever it may be, and use scare tactics to frighten off undecided voters. The rhetoric and scare tactics will be centered on accusations of socialism.

Former Vice President Joe Biden is the best known and best liked of all the potential 2020 Democratic candidates but he still hasn't announced his decision on whether he'll run and he may not be as favored as recent polls have indicated. Yeah, as we learned in 2016, polls can be wrong.
