It is so sad how these fires have destroyed so many homes and killed so many horses. Now a firefighter has died. And I saw on the news that one family lived in Santa Rosa and rented out another house they owned in Ventura and both houses burned to the ground. We should send Christmas cards to all the fire stations and thank the firefighters for the work they do.
The Ventura County fire is now 35% contained and has burned 252,000 acres. The cause is still under investigation.
I found this story on the L.A. Times web site. Some people think the Ventura fire might wind up being the biggest fire in California history.

That prediction seems likely to come true. The Thomas Fire is now California's third-largest in history. It has burned 259,000 acres -- 404 square miles.

The Thomas fire has now burned 269,500 acres, an area larger than New York City and roughly the size of the island of Maui. It is threatening 18,000 homes and is 40% contained.
I have been watching the news on television and one of the fire captains said they probably will not be able to get the fire completely under control until January 7. I do not know how he could make such a prediction. The winds will not last forever and there could be rain and the fire could even start to die out when there is nothing left to burn.
I should start my own news service. The Thomas fire has now burned 270,000 acres and is 45% contained. In the Montecito hills, two mansions have been destroyed and a dozen others are damaged. Jeff Bridges, Jane Seymour, Drew Barrymore, Oprah Winfrey and Ellen DeGeneres are among the many celebrities who live in Montecito.
