Democrats are united in their opposition to The Trump Wall, Donald Trump's monument to himself. Many Republican members of Congress also oppose the wall but the majority fear for their political future if they say so publicly. Trump's immigrant-hating base would consider them to be "weak." However, a few -- including Rubio, Collins, Flake, Hurd, Pearce and Ros-Lehtinen -- are starting to speak up. Here are today's dueling headlines:

Trump obviously lives by the adage, "If at first you don't succeed, try, try again." I wonder how long the next government shutdown will last and how many government workers will be furloughed or forced to work without pay. But, gosh darnit, Trump just has to build The Trump Wall monument to himself! He promised!

Trump told the Wall Street Journal today that calling for another government shutdown is "certainly an option" if he doesn't get $5.7 billion of US taxpayers' money for The Trump Wall -- and on Election Day 2020, government workers are going to remember how our monomaniacal, wall-obsessed President used them as pawns and bargaining chips in the little game of Chicken he played with Congress. But don't forget, Trump is a "great negotiator." He says so.

Donald Trump kept one fourth of the federal government shut down for 35 days because Congress would not meet his demand for $5.7 billion of US taxpayers' money so he can build The Trump Wall monument to himself. Government finally reopened and Trump still hasn't gotten the $5.7 billion of US taxpayers' money that he's demanding. But wait -- there's more! Was it worth it, Donald?

Donald Trump has always loved Fox News, a.k.a. The Trump Cheerleading Channel. In true Hitler-Stalin-Mao-Mussolini fashion, he continually denounces other news outlets as "fake" and "dishonest" and "the enemy of the American people." Several Fox hosts, including Tomi Lahren, Steve Doocy and Lou Dobbs, have started to criticize Trump over the 35-day government shutdown and his failure to get $5.7 billion of US taxpayers' money for The Trump Wall. Trump is now lashing out at Fox News. Apparently the honeymoon is over.

'Bullying journalists is not Presidential': Fox News anchor berates Trump for tweet
 USA TODAY, Jan 29 2019

After President Donald Trump leveled a rare Twitter attack against Fox News — a network he normally praises for its favorable coverage of him — one of the conservative channel's anchors lambasted the president for "bullying journalists."

Fox News anchor Julie Banderas was outraged after Trump posted a tweet Sunday night complaining about her network's coverage of the fallout from the 35-day partial government shutdown and the negotiations for border wall funding.

"Never thought I'd say this but I think @johnrobertsFox and @GillianHTurner @FoxNews have even less understanding of the Wall negotiations than the folks at FAKE NEWS CNN & NBC!" Trump tweeted.

"@realDonaldTrump This is NOT right. I stand by my colleagues @johnrobertsFox and @GillianHTurner They don’t deserve this. No reporter does. They are doing their jobs and reporting the facts. They are not opinion journalists and deserve the respect from the @WhiteHouse they cover," Banderas said in a reply to the President's tweet.

In another tweet, Banderas noted, "We can and do stand plenty of criticism every day, which is fine coming from everyday viewers. Our jobs are not meant to please others. But the office of the @POTUS ought not to be the one lashing out. That's not how this country works. That's not how Freedom of the Press works. Bullying journalists is not Presidential. Period."

Letter from Dennis Alston of Atwater in today's Los Angeles Times:

"If Trump were truly concerned about the 'emergency' posed by illegal border crossings, he would demand that US employers run E-Verify checks on every job applicant, and call for stiff fines or jail sentences forfailure to do so. This approach would staunch the influx of undocumented workers. President George W. Bushfloated such a measure but reversed himself when wealthy GOP backers balked at losing continued access to cheap, exploitable immigrant labor. In truth, Trump's border-wall obsession stems from his desire to erect a showy demagogic symbol. Hence his 'emergency' charade endures."

Of course several undocumented immigrants were working at Trump's golf club in Westchester, New York. They were recently fired and they are perfect examples of what Alston calls "cheap, exploitable immigrant labor." A little hypocritical there, Donald?

Well, here is an interesting -- and unexpected -- twist in the Trump-vs.-illegals battle:

Undocumented former Trump workers ask Congress for protection
 CNN, Jan 29 2018 3:33 PM ET

Undocumented former workers at President Donald Trump's golf clubs are asking members of Congress and law enforcement officials for an investigation into Trump Organization hiring practices -- and for protection from deportation. Four former club workers met today with New Jersey Democratic Senators Robert Menendez and Cory Booker. Menendez said after the meeting that he'd "raise concerns" with federal agencies about ensuring their status is not affected "negatively." Menendez told reporters, "The workers really speak volumes about the hypocrisy of the President who rails against immigrants but uses their labor and does so in a way, and an in an environment, as I understand it, that was hostile to them and threatening to them."

The Washington Post reported this past weekend that a dozen undocumented workers had been fired from the Trump National Golf Club in Westchester, New York. The New York Times first reported in December that another Trump club in Bedminster, New Jersey employed Victorina Morales, an undocumented worker originally from Guatemala.

The former reality television star seems totally unable, or unwilling, to accept reality. He prefers to create his own version of reality and that is what he believes, even though his version of reality isn't real at all. Trumpworld is a very strange place.

Trump and his intel chiefs are worlds apart on ISIS, Russia, border
 NBC News, Jan 29 2019 12:50 PM

The Senate Intelligence Committee's annual worldwide threats hearing, featuring public testimony today from the heads of the CIA, the FBI and other intelligence agencies, seemed at times to be taking place on a different planet than the one President Donald Trump inhabits.

Point by point, the country's top intelligence leaders demolished some of the key national security claims Trump has made since he took office. The President said ISIS has been defeated. The intelligence leaders said the terror group had thousands of fighters and was still plotting attacks. The President said North Korea was no longer a nuclear threat. The intelligence chiefs said North Korea is unlikely to give up its nuclear weapons. The President cast doubt on whether Russia interfered in the 2016 election. The intelligence experts said the Russians had been so successful they were plotting even more sophisticated efforts in 2020.

Perhaps most strikingly, in hours of discussion of security threats, the intelligence chiefs did not once mention the need for a wall along the southern border, which Trump has portrayed as the single most pressing need facing the country. The written threats assessment made clear that most of the illicit drugs entering the US from the south come through legal ports of entry.

Once again, Donald "I-know-more-about-ISIS-than-the-generals-do" Trump is refusing to believe the reports of his own Intelligence agencies. Climate change? No, they're wrong; it's a hoax. Russian election meddling? No, they're wrong; Putin denies it and I believe him. And today: Threats from ISIS, Iran, Russia and North Korea? No, they're "wrong" and "naïve" and "should go back to school." Remember when Trump cited some of America's problems and bragged, "I alone can fix it"? The pompous, narcissistic, megalomaniacal blowhard still believes that. He's wrong.
