Kim Driscoll knows her history: In the 1692 Salem witch trials, "powerless, innocent victims" were hanged despite a lack of evidence. In the 2019 Senate impeachment trial of Donald Trump, there is "ample evidence" and "admission of wrongdoing." Trump, of course, does not know history. He just knows that everything is about him.

Fake. Fraudulent. Untrue. Incorrect. Made up. A lie. A hoax. Total fiction. That is how Donald Trump continues to describe the whistleblower's complaint detailing the July 25 phone call with Volodymyr Zelensky – even after the details were confirmed and corroborated by David Holmes, Mark Sandy, Bill Taylor, Gordon Sondland, Alexander Vindman, Marie Yovanovitch and many other witnesses and admitted to by Mick Mulvaney and Trump himself. Today, Trump said he "immediately" released the transcript of the call. He lied. He released it on September 25, 16 days after the whistleblower's complaint was made public – and even then, two sections of the conversation about Biden were omitted. The non-profit, Florida-based fact checking website PolitiFact has selected Trump's whistleblower attacks as Lie Of The Year. #Winning

Justin Baragona, founder and publisher of Contemptor.com and a senior editor and writer for PoliticusUSA, came up with the perfect description of Trump's nasty six-page letter filled with lies, accusations and insults:

In a letter in today's Los Angeles Times, Lynda Unterthiner of Santa Barbara anticipates the price Congressional Republicans will pay for defending Trump:
"The evidence of Trump's willful wrongdoing and the damage he has done domestically and internationally is staggering, yet there are those who would make impeachment a partisan issue. This President has compromised national security and rejected the authority of Congress, neither of which was done because he is a Republican but because he truly believes he is above the law. If he is allowed to continue this way, we will be electing kings in the future and the Senators who help him now will be irrelevant."

Today's debate was not really a debate. Democrats detailed Trump's impeachable offenses: abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. Trump withheld Congressionally-approved military aid from Ukraine and then asked for a "favor." He wanted Ukraine to dig up dirt on a United States citizen, Joe Biden, Trump's likely political opponent in 2020. Trump solicited a foreign country to help him win an election, then stood in front of reporters and asked China to do the same. Unlike Richard Nixon and Bill Clinton, who cooperated with investigators, Trump ordered his aides and Cabinet members to ignore subpoenas to testify and to refuse to turn over subpoenaed documents. Trump ignores the Constitution and believes he is above the law. Impeachment is the only remedy.
Republicans participating in the "debate" unanimously disagreed. They couldn't honestly defend Trump so they spent their time attacking Pelosi, attacking Schiff, attacking Democrats, attacking the investigation and attacking the impeachment process. No House Republicans – none – are expected to vote in favor of the two articles of impeachment. There is really no more Republican Party. It is now the Donald Trump Party – and the Constitution, the rule of law, the Presidential oath of office, national security and the integrity of our elections are unimportant. What a sad time for our nation.

Adam Schiff predicts Congressional Republicans will "rue the day" they chose to ignore Trump's wrongdoing. I disagree. They've already sold their souls to Trump. They no longer have any backbone, morals or ethics. They're blindly loyal members of the Cult of Donald Trump and they worship and adore their orange-skinned idol. Look how they tried to defend him today:

Here are the highlights – make that lowlights – from Emperor Trump's diatribe at last night's rally in Battle Creek, Michigan. He again said Hillary Clinton is "crooked," he again called his impeachment "illegal and unconstitutional" and he again insisted he had done "nothing wrong." All three of those statements are false but the President knows the brainwashed, brain-dead, blindly loyal members of the Cult of Donald Trump worship their orange-skinned idol and believe everything he tells them.
"Through their depraved actions today, crazy Nancy Pelosi's House Democrats have branded themselves with an eternal mark of shame," spewed the vain, pompous, egotistical, narcissistic Emperor who has no shame at all and seems to think he is God. "It really is. It's a disgrace. They don't believe you have the right to select your own President," continued the man who lost the popular vote but became President anyway. "This lawless partisan witch hunt is a political suicide march for the Democrat Party," declared the Emperor, who called the party by the wrong name: It's Democratic, not Democrat. "They're the ones who should be impeached, every one of them. Americans will show up by the tens of millions next year to vote Pelosi the hell out of office."
Gripe, gripe, gripe, gripe, gripe. But admit he was wrong and apologize? Not Emperor Trump. Never. He is a total disgrace to the office of the Presidency.

Emperor Trump's diatribe last night wasn't really a "campaign speech." It was just a much lengthier version of his non-stop Twitter attacks on Schiff, Pelosi, Democrats and impeachment – filled with the usual lies, of course. Lies about Hillary Clinton, Democrats, crowd size, water pressure, poll numbers, black support, union support, you name it – and how sad it is that Trump's blindly loyal supporters believe every lie he tells them. It's even sadder that they will vote in 2020.
