I read that article too. I don't buy it. Did you catch the phrase about using some kind of adapter into his tape player or something? The point is, besides not having the content of S-XM, using internet radio in a car is klunky. I don't care how you can make it work...you have to MAKE IT WORK! Many people find that stuff a royal pain in the ass!!! Certainly, baby boomers (have the $) don't like fooling with this crap....just like turning sh$t on. And, no way the cell companies are going to sit by and allow the free riding internet services to suck up all their bandwidth for free. That bunch of chickens will be coming home to roost soon. S-XM won't have that constraint, other than iPhone, but that's fine because they will be in the same boat with all the weak internet radio companies there.
EVERYONE NEEDS TO STOP ASSUMING INTERNET RADIO SERVICE IS FREE OR WILL BE FREE. NOTHING IS EVER FREE!!! (for long, anyway).
Charles, what makes you think that Cell phones and smart phones will even be around in 10 years?most states and communities are banning hand helds in cars while driving and with ON-STAR model tied to hands free in the radio with Satrad may be a bigger new evolution. Not to mention the Health issues being raised about Cell phones and tumors..
looking good right now, broke .32 buying is rampant. plus the btls show is ****ing great today. DEAD BABY
wow! SIRI is in the green!!! awesome....
Are you serious? A half dozen of my friends stream to their cars today. Todd from nicemac had the starplyr doing it on his iPhone and posted about it. I come here and drop of relevant pieces of news and I would just go away quitely after do so but I can not let these misconceptions be posted like fact. PEOPLE ARE STREAMING INTERNET RADIO TO THEIR CARS and one of my friends TO HIS MOTORCYCLE.
For most its as simple as plugging the iphone into the front aux jack on the receive which is now common in just about all new aftermarket receivers. The one in my Jeep is 5 years old and it has one. It is not brain surgery, its far easier then hooking up an aftermarket Sirius or XM receiver.
well heres a piece of news for you charles, bandwidth is drying up, in 2 years trhings are going to start slowing down. if every body started streaming music to their phones in their cars like dumbshit cause it just sounds stupid as all hell to me then that would use up alot of bandwidth. which of course would eventually cause even more problems then we are already facing. so your telling me the signal is as clear as sat's and can go anywhere without dropouts or signal degradation
i just dont think its going to ever become main stream. but okay we got your point charles can we move off the all this is bad for siri crap. we heard you, and we understand your view.
No one said you can't do it, or that people won't do it. But you are putting a huge amount of stock in this as a huge threat to S-XM, and there are some who respectfully disagree. I stated my reasons why I disagree. Think about the cell phone companies.....as more and more services ride on their network, they need to get paid. Either by the cell customer, or, the services. No free ride. If 3G and future 4G or wiMax see huge explosion of people streaming music, video, etc, they will need to start charging more, throttling use, build more infrastructure (charge even more). Who's gonna pay for that? It will be in their best interest to probably try to shift the cost to the internet radio companies, etc. And they could do it too....simply block access to their website IP addresses unless they fork over some big bucks. That's my point. No free ride. That's when competition starts getting judged by the marketplace on an even playing field. and, now let's talk CONTENT.....:)
Driving around Boston (and the greater area) the 3g signal has less dropouts and the sound quality is as good if not better. Don't forget that they are working on 4g networks as we speak. The whole country is working towards better networking and we already lead the world, I don't see bandwidth ever being an issue like it is in places like Australia today.
Yes, I agree that it can be a matter of plugging it in. But....it's now a phone hanging in a cup holder or something awkward. Sure, it works. People do stuff like that, I know. But, it's not an elegant technical solution. And, what about changing channels, etc? That is getting a lot of state legislative attention due to car accidents. It's not a good, sustainable solution as it is today. And, per my previous post, the cell bandwidth is the real hurdle.
It was said that it is difficult... all I am saying is that it is not. That is fine you guys can all believe what you will, I am not going to stop posting what I think is relevant news. You guys can do with it what you will. All I did was drop off a link to a news story.
I am not saying anyone will buy an iPhone just to stream internet music. But 100 million people will have iPhones where that is a nice added feature if they so chose to use it and man oh man do those iPhone geeks love to show off what their iPhone can do.
i streamed sirius using my sprint instinct and was blowing Jigga Bytes of data by the boatload. and it was only on a few minutes to an hour a day.
I had an unlimited data package but that wouldn't last long if people were maxing out the system.
But bandwidth won't be free! I think you are missing the point. Sure, as long as you have nascent services in use, no problem. But, if you were to see a true explosion in internet radio via cell network, the bandwidth would become saturated very quickly. that's why it's not sustainable as a 'free' service. Where's the money going to come from? Yup, cell users and/or the internet radio/video/other companies. Someone's gotta pay.
How is it any different then a bulky Sirius or XM receiver? You dont let you Sirius receiver hang around or sit in a cupholder do you? They make elegant cradles for the iPhone just like anything else. Not to mention that some automakers are building in aux jacks and ipod/phone docking stations.
according to lvlt which is a company i have invested in before and follow closely, in 2 years if more fiber isnt put into the ground bandwidth will start the shrivel up. any large content will be slowed down, im assumming music is considered large content delivery, if its small content meaning like sending a resume back in forth as opposed to a video then it wont be a big deal. i dont know exactly how much bandwidth it takes to stream music, but i imagine it would fall under the large content category. which in the next 2 years if companies dont start paying for the upgrades to their networks, which doesnt happen overnight things will start to slow down. which wont bode well for streaming anything, unless u dont mind some buffering. i see it as something that can be done but will never be as practical as even am/fm
