Sirius Canada, XM Canada closer to merging than thought

"According to a report by The Globe and Mail, sources within the investment banking community say that Canadian Satellite Radio and Sirius Canada have hired investment firms to help negotiate out a deal.

XM Canada supposedly hired National Bank Financial to scope out its options, while Sirius tapped RBC Dominion Securities to represent its interests, reports The Globe and Mail."

In 1992 the Federal Communications Commission allocated the 2.3GHz "S-Band" as a reserved frequency for the nationwide broadcasting of Digital Audio Radio Service, known as DARS.

Four corporations applied for license to broadcast on DARS, while only two applications were approved by the FCC: Sirius Satellite Radio and XM Satellite Radio. Each company paid a license fee of more than $80 million dollars.

In July 2008 the two companies merged after obtaining government approval to form a new company, Sirius XM Radio, with a collective customer base of over 18 million subscribers.

Sirius XM Radio uses four satellites placed in geostationary orbit 22,220 miles above North America. Built by Boeing Aerospace, the satellites are named Rock, Roll, Rhythm, and Blues, and combined with ground repeaters placed in large cities provide blanket coverage for the entire United States.

Satellite radio receivers are available in different forms: car radios, portable radios, and in-home appliances. Each receiver is equipped with a special computer chip and ID number that allows the radio to receive and unscramble the signal from space.

Each channel broadcast includes the channel content and a data-stream providing content information such as song title, artist name, and the genre of music.

Subscribers to Sirius XM Radio have access to hundreds of stations broadcasting near-CD quality music, talk, and news content, with a guarantee of no more than seven minutes of commercial content per broadcast hour.

volume appears to be a bit higher today, hmm could we get an early start on the way up? would be nice but i doubt it :o

I do believe we will be back at .10 area again sometime today. But I am wondering if this could be the lowest it goes since its been hanging around for the past few days between .10 and .11

I guess I am the only one that thinks SIRI will trade and close above .11 today...

im hoping it does demian but i dont want to be let down haha, it seems like its got the momentum.

If it does that is fine. I just wanted to buy some more stock. I got patience so I can wait as long as it takes to get back to that point unless Mel announces something between now and when I buy.

I expect it to go up until Friday when I will buy more shares and then it will go back down. That seems to happen everytime I buy...

Save Sirius Group Calls For Satcaster Subpoena

Save Sirius, an organization of shareholders upset with the fallout of the Sirius-XM merger, is now calling for a Congressional subpoena into the merged company. Orbitcast reports that Michael Hartleib, who heads up Save Sirius, has written a letter to Sen. Sam Brownback (R-KS), saying that the satcaster's protected documents are "nothing more than an attempt to obfuscate a crime."

In the letter, Hartleib says that "It is my opinion that it is without question [Mel] Karmazin misled, willfully withheld and omitted information from members of Congress. As I am sure you are aware, withholding relevant information and/or intentionally misleading members of Congress is considered perjury under its definition...These documents need to be subpoenaed by Congress as I believe the protected status is nothing more than an attempt to obfuscate a crime." He adds that, "It is my opinion these two companies have colluded and conspired to restrain free trade in violation of our Nation's Anti-Trust Laws including but not limited to the Sherman Act."

Hartleib later says that "The failure of the FCC to release these documents makes them complicit in a multi-year conspiracy to restrain free trade and has allowed these companies to consolidate the entire SDARS spectrum which has been their goal from at least 2002. Despite there being a law prohibiting the combination of the two SDARS' licenses, within mere months after becoming operational in 2002." He calls for "a full investigation into the breakdown of the FCC and how it is these two companies were able to ignore their Federal Mandate for over ten years and make a Federal Regulatory Agency a coconspirator."

Also, last week's reported Sirius XM price increases have been officially announced. On both XM and Sirius' websites, the new pricing rates have been confirmed. You can see the announcements on XM's site here and on Sirius' here.

And in related news, The Globe and Mail reports that "the door is now open" for Sirius Canada and XM Canada to merge as well. Acording to the paper's sources, investment banking firms have been hired by both satcasters to look into merger options.

Source: Satellite Radio iPhone App going public soon

"Orbitcast has received word from multiple sources (one of which is extremely reliable) that the uSirius StarPlayr iPhone app - which will allow you to play Sirius XM Radio on your iPhone - will be going public soon.

According to these sources, the uSirius StarPlayr app will be submitted to the Apple Store by Saturday, January 31st. After submitting, Apple simply needs to approve the iPhone app, and it will go public."

I locked my sub in yesterday. When I got me new vehicle and the free sub ran out, I renewed for a 3 year subscription for nearly $400. This was back in September, before XM officially had the lifetime subs (Which, btw, are still not advertized ANYWHERE on the website). The cost of my lifetime sub was $399. I was going to have to pay like $30 to upgrade from 3 years to the lifetime. I figured what the hell, added best of Sirius for another $100. That also locked in my internet for free for lifetime as well.

Not a bad deal for $130 huh?

looks like i got my birthday present from siri, the bidders have been a bit friendly as of late, looking at the charts it looks like an uptrend is in place for the moment.
