How did our nation get to the point where we have a President who lies constantly, attacks the FBI, attacks the Justice Department, attacks the news media, attacks Democrats (and even quite a few Republicans) and tries to denigrate and/or silence his critics -- and, with very few exceptions (such as Jeff Flake and John McCain), Republicans act deaf, dumb and blind to all these assaults on our Constitution, on our democracy and on our rule of law. Comey is correct when he says "their silence is shameful."

James Comey slams Trump for calling Michael Cohen a 'rat'
 CBS News, Dec 17 2018 6:15 PM

After former FBI Director James Comey testified again today before a House panel about the 2016 FBI investigation into Hillary Clinton's private email server, he talked with reporters outside the room, weighing in on President Trump's recent tweet calling Michael Cohen "a rat." "It undermines the rule of law," Comey said. "This is the President of the United States calling a witness who is cooperating with his own Justice Department a 'rat.' This is not about Republicans and Democrats. This is about — what does it mean to be an American? There's a set of values that represent the glue of this country and they are under attack by things just like that. We have to stop being numb to it." Comey also had harsh criticism for Republican lawmakers, who he urged to "stand up and speak the truth — not be cowed by mean tweets or fear of their base. There is a truth and they're not telling it." He added, "Their silence is shameful."

Cozying up to Putin, Erdogan and Khashoggi. Attacking the FBI and the Justice Department. Denouncing the Mueller investigation as a "witch hunt." Calling global warming a "hoax." Calling the news media "fake news" and "the enemy of the American people." Spending Trump Foundation money on himself. Paying hush money to women with whom he had affairs. Giving huge tax cuts to the wealthy. Lying about his interests in Russia. Threatening to shut down the government if he doesn't get $5 billion for his stupid border wall.

And, yesterday, announcing that he's pulling our troops out of Syria because "ISIS is defeated." ISIS is not defeated -- and Trump's arbitrary decision, made without the consent of Congress, was the final straw for the Secretary of Defense, who announced his resignation. Democrats and Republicans alike are condemning the "chaos" and the "grave policy errors" that are endangering our nation, alienating our allies and strengthening our enemies. Read it and weep:

Here is one of today's outrageous messages from the Tweeter-In-Chief:

 Donald J. Trump
 @realDonaldTrump
Even President Ronald Reagan tried for 8 years to build a Border Wall, or Fence, and was unable to do so. Others have tried also. We will get it done, one way or another!
 4:38 AM - Dec 21 2018

Bob Spitz, author of Reagan: An American Journey, says Reagan never sought to build a wall. H.W. Brands, author of Reagan: The Life, says Reagan never sought to build a wall. Kelly Barton, an archivist at the Ronald Reagan Library in Simi Valley, says Reagan never sought to build a wall. Rudy Giulani said "truth isn't truth" -- but, when it comes to Donald Trump, "lies are lies."

Members of ISIS and the Taliban are pleased with Trump's decision to remove US troops from Syria and Afghanistan. They're gloating about their "victory" over the United States. But Trump's arbitrary decision, made without consent of Congress, infuriated Democrats and Republicans alike and led to the resignation of Secretary of Defense James Mattis. And now, the exodus continues:

The Washington nightmare before Christmas: a government in chaos
Stephen Collinson, CNN, Dec 22 2018 2:05 PM

President Donald Trump is precipitating chaos and seeking to wield unrestrained power as America enters a holiday period overshadowed by political pandemonium orchestrated by the disruptor-in-chief. For the third time this year, Congress is paralyzed, unable to prevent a shutdown that sent thousands of federal employees home for Christmas unsure about their upcoming paychecks.

Trump is polling advisers on whether he has the power to fire Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell following sell-offs on Wall Street that have taken away one of his favorite measures of his own job performance: soaring stock markets. The revelation came days after the President announced a snap withdrawal of US troops in Syria against the advice of his advisers and without consulting allies. The move provoked the resignations of his most admired Cabinet officer, Defense Secretary James Mattis, who penned a devastating critique of Trump's "America First" world view, and a day later, of Trump's special envoy in the ISIS fight, Brett McGurk.

The Supreme Court dealt a blow to Trump by knocking back his new restrictions on asylum seekers who cross the southern border. The sense of things slipping out of control on multiple fronts left the political world more unsettled and on edge than at any other time in Trump's tumultuous presidency.

The narcissistic, petulant, thin-skinned orange parrot continues to squawk, "Fake news! Fake news! Awwkkk!" He also continues to say we defeated ISIS -- which is a lie -- and calls himself our "favorite President" -- which is a lie -- and slanders a man whom he admits he doesn't know. Trump was a reality TV host? He no longer knows what reality is. Here are the latest idiotic comments from the Tweeter-In-Chief:

"Brett McGurk, who I do not know, was appointed by President Obama in 2015. Was supposed to leave in February but he just resigned prior to leaving. Grandstander? The Fake News is making such a big deal about this nothing event!"

"If anybody but your favorite President, Donald J. Trump, announced that, after decimating ISIS in Syria, we were going to bring our troops back home (happy & healthy), that person would be the most popular hero in America. With me, hit hard instead by the Fake News Media."

 What a delusional egotist!

Here is one Republican who disagrees with Trump's demand for $5 billion to build a "big, beautiful wall":

"This is a made-up fight so the President can look like he’s fighting, but even if he wins, our borders are going to be insecure." -- Tennessee Senator Bob Corker today on CNN's State Of The Union, arguing that we should spend money on sophisticated technology and not on a wall.
