In dozens of sketches on Laugh-In, Arte's dirty-old-man character, Tyrone F. Horneigh, would make lewd comments to Ruth Buzzi's spinster character on the park bench. One of their exchanges: "Do you believe in the hereafter?" "Of course I do." "Well then, you know what I'm here after." Every sketch ended with Buzzi whacking him with her purse. Rest in peace, Arte. You were always "verrrry interesting."

The 1964 album Getz/Gilberto by saxophonist Stan Getz and guitarist João Gilberto included The Girl From Ipanema, which featured Portuguese lyrics sung by Gilberto and English lyrics sung by his wife Astrud. The song, minus the Portuguese lyrics, was released as a single and became a worldwide hit. In a 1964 Peanuts comic strip, Linus told Lucy his teacher was proud of him because "I was the only one who knew where Ipanema is." (It's a neighborhood in the southern part of Rio de Janeiro.) Gilberto developed the "bossa nova" style of samba in 1957. Bim Bom, which he wrote in 1956 and recorded in 1958, is considered the first bossa-nova song.
