Today is election day. I plan to be here all day at the Sirius Buzz news desk. (Actually, it's just a piece of plywood sitting atop two stacks of orange crates -- but don't tell anyone.)
The first results will likely come from Indiana and Kentucky, where polls close at 6 PM local time. In most other states, polls close at 7 or 8. Four states close their polls at 7:30. Because millions of Americans vote by mail and the ballots will have to be verified and counted, it may be several days before we know the results of close races. In Oregon and Washington, all voting is done by mail and ballots must be received by 8 PM Pacific time.
To take control of the Senate, Democrats need to unseat Republicans in at least eight of these nine states: Arizona, Nevada, Montana, Missouri, Texas, Tennessee, Florida, Indiana and West Virginia. Don't count on it.
As for Democrats regaining control of the House, we might know in 12 hours. The Sirius Buzz News Network -- which consists of me at my news desk -- will provide election updates throughout the evening.

Not knowing your taste I have arranged to have two restaurants provide sustenance for you during your shift - great and spectacular - your choice.
I will cover all expense; oh, and, they will bring a suitable table, chair and whatever china suits you. It's the least we can do since you may be there until cobwebs begin to...never mind.
We'll be watching.
Bon appetit!

With all the problems caused by Trump's tariffs and trade wars, did you have to mention "china"? Oh well, I appreciate the offer. Food from Arby's and Taco Bell will be just fine. This could be a very long night.
In the past hundred years, there have been only three midterm elections in which the party in power gained seats in the House. Nancy Pelosi says she is "100% confident" that Democrats will take control of the House this year.
-
As you wish, the chains you mention will be contacted. Please note, a change of taste will be honored.
Sorry for the 'China' reference.
As to your last sentence: what happens after that is the question. The last forty years do NOT provide solace.

Trump spent this morning on Twitter praising Republicans and doing his usual anti-Democrat fear-mongering. Democrats will bring millions of illegals, drug dealers, killers and MS-13 gang members into the United States, don'tcha know. Despite seeing improvements in the economy, a small majority of voters still think our nation is heading in the wrong direction, according to a poll taken November 5-6. Polls are now closed in Indiana and Kentucky and we will soon start to learn if voters will turn our nation in the right direction.

In the past month, several polls called the Indiana Senate race between Democrat Joe Donnelly and Republican Mike Braun a "toss-up." With just under 2% of the votes counted, Braun is leading 58.1% to 37.7%. That is not what I would call a "toss-up."
According to a CNN exit poll in Indiana today, 30% of voters made decisions based on their support for Trump and 34% voted based on their dislike of Trump, while 32% said Trump was not a factor.
An MSNBC poll revealed that 58% of first-time voters in this year's midterm elections favor Democrats and only 38% favor Republicans. Will tonight's results bear that out? Stay tuned.

Polls have now closed in nine states. CNN is reporting that in the first 12 House seats up for grabs -- and please, no jokes about seat grabbing -- Democrats lead in 11 of the races, although the margins in most races are small and could easily change.
In the races for Governor, Democrat Richard Cordray has a huge lead in Ohio and Republican Brian Kemp has a huge lead in Georgia. In Florida, Democrat Andrew Gillum leads for a minute or two, then Republican Ron DeSantis takes the lead, then Gillum retakes the lead, then DeSantis retakes the lead, then.......

NPR says this year's voter turnout will be the highest since 1966. In the Texas Senate race, with only a third of the precincts reporting, accounting for 47% of the vote, Democratic challenger Beto O'Rourke is leading Republican incumbent Ted Cruz, 50.52% to 48.88%. If O'Rourke holds on to his lead, he will be the first Democrat to win a statewide election in Texas since 1994.
-
CNN is projecting incumbent Democratic Senator Joe Manchin as the winner of the Senate race in West Virginia. This is surprising because Trump won more than 68% of the state's vote in 2016. Of course he accomplished that feat by promising to put all the coal miners back to work. "Make America Dependent On Coal Again."
Republican Marsha Blackburn has won the Senate race in Tennessee and Republican Roger Wicker has won the Senate race in Mississippi. I'm projecting that the Democrats' chance of controlling the Senate is now zero.

The California ballot has a measure that would keep us on daylight saving time all year long. I hope it passes because there is no reason to keep changing the time twice a year and it is hard to get used to the changes. Arizona does not have time changes because they stay on standard time all year.
-
Republican Mike Braun, a multimillionaire auto parts magnate, has defeated incumbent Senator Joe Donnelly, the only Democratic statewide officeholder in Indiana. That predicted "blue wave" seems to be ebbing -- and I fear what the next two years will bring if Trump and the Republicans retain control of the House.

Democrats have picked up three House seats in Pennsylvania and south Florida and others in Minnesota, Kansas, New York, New Jersey and the suburbs of Denver and Washington DC. They have now gained 12 of the 23 seats needed to take control of the House.
In the Texas Senate race, with 64% of the votes counted, Ted Cruz leads Democratic challenger Beto O'Rourke 51.1% to 48.2%. CBS and the Associated Press are projecting Cruz as the winner. Some day the people of Texas will elect another Democratic Congressman. It may not happen in our lifetime, but.......

As of 8:40 PM Pacific time, Democrats now have 168 House seats and the Republicans have 166. In projecting Democrats will take control of the House, CNN says, "The party gains new power to challenge Trump and sets up a divided Congress until the 2020 election." In Mississippi, no Senate candidate got 50% of the vote so there will be a runoff election November 27 between Democrat Mike Espy and Republican Cindy Hyde-Smith. But wait -- there's more! Trump's hateful, divisive, anti-immigrant rhetoric didn't fill everyone with fear and loathing:

Democrat Jared Polis, who has served in the House of Representatives since 2009, has been elected Governor of Colorado, defeating Republican candidate and state treasurer Walker Stapleton. Democratic nominee Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, 29, won the race for New York's 14th Congressional district and will be the youngest woman ever to serve in Congress.
As of 9:10 Pacific time, Democrats have won 191 seats in the House and Republicans have won 177. The Democrats need to pick up 21 seats to gain control of the House. CNN is predicting they could pick up as many as 35.
-
As of 9:30 Pacific Time, Democrats have won 198 seats in the House. They need 218. Republicans have won 184. Democrat Sean Casten, who campaigned on healthcare protections and stronger gun-control laws, has defeated six-term Republican Representative Peter Roskum in suburban Chicago. First-time Democratic candidate Jason Crow has defeated five-term Republican Representative Mike Coffman in suburban Denver. Democrats have defeated Republican incumbents in several other states as well.

California Representative Duncan Hunter and New York Representative Chris Collins were the first Republicans to support Presidential candidate Donald Trump. Hunter was indicted in August on several counts of wire fraud, conspiracy, falsifying records, campaign finance violations and taking campaign funds for his personal use. Collins was indicted in August on several counts of wire fraud, securities fraud and making false statements regarding an insider trading scheme. Tonight both men were re-elected, obviously by voters who value their party above morals, ethics, honesty, decency and integrity.
As of 10:55 PM Pacific time, Democrats have won 209 House seats and Republicans have won 194. I'm going to bed. If anything exciting happens in the next few hours, somebody else will have to post the news. Thank you and good night.

A record number of women -- 272 -- were candidates in this year's midterms. Not all races have been decided but as of 10:20 AM Pacific time, nine women have been elected Governor, 12 women have been elected to the Senate and 96 to the House of Representatives. Democrats now have 220 seats in the House and Republicans have 194, with 21 still undecided.
Today at a press conference, Trump said he's looking forward to working with the Democrats -- yeah, sure -- and he's hopeful of getting ten Democrats in the Senate to side with Republicans so he can pass a tax cut for the middle class. To offset the cost, Trump said he "may have to make some adjustments" to the tax rate for big corporations and the wealthiest americans. Yeah, sure.

Republicans place their party above all else. They would never consider voting for anyone other than a Republican -- even if the Republican is deceased.

An increase in the minimum age for purchases of pistols and semi-automatics, a ten-day waiting period, expanded background checks and a requirement that guns be safely stored. The CBS headline could have simply said "Washington" instead of "Washington state." Nobody would ever think these gun control measures were passed in that other Washington.

Jon Tester, the top Democrat on the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee, has won a third term in the Montana Senate, beating Republican Matt Rosendale, the state auditor. In Connecticut, Democrat Ned Lamont narrowly defeated Republican Bob Stefanowski in the race for Governor.
As of 12:30 PM Pacific time, Democrats have won 222 seats in the House, Republicans have won 196 seats and 17 are still undecided.
