A district judge, responding to a lawsuit brought by the ACLU, has ordered the Trump administration to release the names of the 101 children under the age of five who have been separated from their parents. Many of the parents have already left the United States -- without their children. Yes sir, Donald Trump and his administration are all heart.

Migrants describe frigid, hungry days in 'ice boxes' and 'dog pounds'
CBS News, Jul 24 2018 10:41 AM
In exhibits filed in federal court this month, 223 migrants detained at the Mexican border this year describe "hieleras" and "perreras" -- Spanish for "ice boxes" and "dog pounds" -- nicknames for the Customs & Border Protection facilities in Texas, Arizona and California where they were initially taken after being apprehended by federal authorities. Their testimonies speak of food "not fit for consumption," overcrowding and abuse.
The statements, which were given to attorneys who interviewed detained migrants and inspected detention sites in June and July, are the latest salvo in the decades-old Flores v Reno case, which in 1997 led to national standards for facilities holding migrant children. Attorneys at the Center For Human Rights & Constitutional Law say the federal government is currently violating those standards.

Judge extends halt on deportations of separated families
The Associated Press, Aug 17 2018 2:57 PM
A federal judge has extended a freeze on deporting families separated at the US-Mexico border, giving a reprieve to hundreds of children and their parents to remain in the United States. US District Judge Dana Sabraw said in his order Thursday that "hasty" deportation of children after reunification with their parents would deprive them of their right to seek asylum. The ACLU had requested families be given at least a week. The judge's order did not specify a date for when the reprieve would end.

ICE detains man driving pregnant wife to hospital to deliver baby
CBS News, Aug 18 2018 4:50 PM
The husband of a California woman was arrested Wednesday by Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents while he drove her to the hospital to deliver their baby. Joel Arrona was arrested in San Bernardino and remains in custody pending "removal proceedings," the federal agency said in a statement.
Arrona was driving his wife, Maria del Carmen Venegas, to the hospital for a scheduled cesarean section when they stopped to get gas. She said two ICE agents approached them and asked for identification. Venegas showed the agents her ID but her husband did not have his with him. When the couple offered to get his ID at their home nearby, Arrona was taken into custody. Venegas was left at the gas station by herself and was forced to drive herself to the hospital.
In a statement, ICE said Arrona is a Mexican citizen who has been living in the US illegally. The agency added, "ICE no longer exempts classes or categories of removable aliens from potential enforcement. All those in violation of the immigration laws may be subject to immigration arrest, detention and removal from the United States."

Thousands of undocumented immigrants were under 16 when they were brought to the US by their parents. In 2012, Obama established the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, which protects those young immigrants from deportation if they are in school or have completed high school. Trump tried, and failed, to end DACA in 2017. This year, eight states and two Governors filed a lawsuit in the hope of having DACA declared unconstitutional. Today a federal judge ruled against them but he said he thinks DACA is illegal. The fate of DACA will probably have to be decided by the Supreme Court.

Trump does not like illegal immigrants. Trump also does not like legal immigrants. He's made it much harder for highly-skilled people from other countries to get work visas and an increasing number of applicants are being denied. As a result, we have a shortage of tech workers, hotel workers, medical workers and landscapers. No, Trump does not like immigrants -- although his grandfather immigrated from Bavaria, his first wife immigrated from Czechoslovakia and his third wife immigrated from Slovenia.

As Hurricane Florence approaches the Carolinas, we learned that $10,000,000 was taken from FEMA's budget and given to ICE so more migrants could be held in detention centers -- and the number of migrant children being held is now at an all-time high: 12,800. There hasn't been an increase in the number of migrants crossing the border but fewer migrant children are being released to sponsors, parents or family members. They're being kept in detention centers here in the "land of the free."

The Trump administration's war on immigrants continues. In fiscal year 2015 (which began October 1, 2014), the United States accepted 84,995 refugees. In fiscal year 2016, the US accepted 97,000. President Obama said the US would accept 110,000 refugees in fiscal year 2017 -- but Donald Trump became President and cut the number to 45,000. That limit was maintained in fiscal year 2018. In the new fiscal year which begins October 1, 2018, the number of refugees accepted will be cut even further, to 30,000. "If Trump only had a heart..... "
