Brace yourself. Now that one California city has done this, eventually the entire state will follow suit and then there will be pressure on all the other states to enact similar bans.

Fresh beef instead of frozen! Will wonders never cease! Maybe next they'll switch to fresh ice cream instead of frozen. Wait, what?
McDonald's switching to fresh beef in its US locations
Time, Mar 6 2018 10:23 AM
McDonald’s announced today that it has switched to fresh beef Quarter Pounders, rather than frozen, in 3,500 of the chain’s restaurants in the U.S. and plans to expand to more locations by May. The fast food giant’s announcement follows its pledge a year ago to roll out fresh beef in the majority of its 14,000 U.S. restaurants by mid-2018. "Our suppliers have invested about $60 million updating their supply chain to be able to make this conversion from frozen to fresh," McDonald’s U.S President Chris Kempczinski said.

The Cheat Sheet -- not a very good name for a website, if you ask me -- just posted the results of a Consumer Reports survey of more than 50,000 shoppers who rated supermarkets on cleanliness, competitive pricing, staff courtesy, checkout speed, produce and meat quality and seven other criteria. The chain with the worst reputation is, surprisingly, Walmart. I'm reminded of the 2004 South Park episode "Something Wall-Mart This Way Comes," in which all the townspeople complain about the huge new Wall-Mart driving smaller stores out of business -- but yet they all still shop there.

What a nice combination: "pizza" and "free."
UMBC's upset of Virginia means free Little Caesars pizza on April 2
Detroit Free Press, Mar 17 2018 2:04 PM
Little Caesars said it would offer a free lunch if the impossible happened. It happened Friday night in Charlotte. Number 16 seed University of Maryland-Baltimore County made history by demolishing Number 1 seed Virginia, 74-54. It was the first time a number 16 seed knocked off a top seed in the NCAA tournament. The pizza company promised that every family that enters a participating store between 11:30 AM and 1 PM on April 2 and mentions the offer at the check-out counter would receive one free Hot-N-Ready lunch combo: four slices of Detroit-style deep dish pizza with pepperoni and one 20-ounce Pepsi-Cola product drink.

CNBC, Mar 22 2018
Starting in May, Taco Bell will roll out Classic, Mild and Fire tortilla chips in grocery and convenience stores. The chips take their flavor and packaging inspiration from Taco Bell's signature sauces. These packaged chips will join the line of dips, sauces, shells and seasoning mixes that Taco Bell sells in partnership with Kraft.

Heinz teases a 'new' mayo-ketchup hybrid and Twitter goes crazy
The company did not invent this concoction, as many people point out
Eater.com, Apr 12 2018 2:01 PM
Yesterday the Kraft Heinz corporation unleashed a contest of sorts, pitting its "new" creation, a blend of ketchup and mayonnaise called Mayochup, up against Americans' taste buds. Vote "yes" for the condiment, a Twitter poll cried, and Kraft Heinz — which sold $6.78 billion worth of sauces and condiments in 2016 — would make the product available in bottle form for "you saucy Americans."
As media outlets began to report about the product, many took to Twitter to hash out the sauce’s actual origin story. As residents of Puerto Rico, Argentina, Colombia, Germany and the American Midwest have been pointing out, mayo-ketchup sauces have been part of the culinary landscape for decades. Regardless of whether Heinz ends up releasing the product in the US, other versions such as Goya’s Mayo Ketchup and the artisan-branded Stephen’s Gourmet are already available on US store shelves.

Tarantula topping draws the brave into North Carolina burger joint
The Huffington Post, Apr 13 2018 5:37 PM
A hamburger topped with a tarantula is attracting customers to a restaurant in Durham, North Carolina. Bull City Burger & Brewery is celebrating "Exotic Meat Month" by featuring burgers made with everything from alligator to iguana, python, bison, turtle and insects. But it’s the tarantula challenge that has customers going buggy. For $30, customers get a 100% North Carolina pasture-raised beef burger topped with Gruyère cheese, chili sauce and an oven-roasted tarantula. If they finish their plate, they get a T-shirt to immortalize the feat. At least four people have completed the challenge.

Summa cum laude is a Latin phrase meaning "with highest honors." In Charleston, South Carolina, an 18-year-old boy was graduating from his Christian-based home-school program with a 4.89 grade-point average and the honor of summa cum laude. His mother ordered a congratulatory cake from her local Publix grocery store. The husband picked up the cake and when he got it home, they saw that it had been censored. It said Summa --- Laude. Cum, which means "with" in Latin, was considered to be a "profane" word. Hey, Publix, here is another Latin phrase for you: Tu stultus es!

These disgusting flavors will be included in this year's BeanBoozled assortments. The disgusting-flavor jelly beans have the same colors as regular jelly beans so you can't tell which ones are disgusting until you bite into them. What fun! What suspense! What excitement! And what kind of schmucks actually buy these? Previous disgusting flavors have included vomit, dirty socks, dead fish, skunk spray, rotten eggs and moldy cheese.

In 1958, the first International House Of Pancakes -- what the heck was "international" about it? -- opened in Burbank. In 1973, the chain shortened its name to IHOP. And now, in June 2018, IHOP is becoming a laughingstock:

The fast-food chain that specializes in subs is slowly sinking. (Yes, another bad pun. I know.)
Subway is backing off breakfast
Business Insider, Jun 14 2018
Subway is no longer requiring franchisees to serve breakfast. The sandwich chain changed its policies to allow franchisees to opt out of serving egg-based sandwiches and opening by 7 AM every day. The chain's breakfast options never caught on across the United States in the eight years since Subway began serving the morning meal. Market-research firm Field Agent found that 43% of Subway customers do not visit for breakfast and 19% did not even know the chain served breakfast.
With unemployment at a 17-year low, restaurants are struggling to hire and retain workers. Finding employees to work early hours is yet another complication that helped convince Subway to change its breakfast policies. The change comes at a tumultuous time for Subway, with the chain's US store count falling by 909 last year.
