Here is a simple example: Many people have their lawn cut also, even though it makes no economic sense for them to do so. After you figure in what your time and expense is worth and the time it takes you to cut your lawn and what you pay to have the service done. The fact is those people would actually have to spend more time at their own job to pay for the service then they would have to cut their own lawn (of course this all depends on how much enjoyment each person gets from their job, that is all relative though considering surveys show almost all hate their jobs).

It actually as applied today has more to do with orieintation of the house
(facing south), % of glass versus mass and the amount of glass you use on the west, east, south, and north sides. All combined with a good amount of insulation. I assume you knew all that? :D Its the simpliest and most effective form of solar energy.
