The Constitutional process of impeachment is completely foreign to King Donald the First, his brainwashed blindly loyal lawyers, his brainwashed blindly loyal supporters and the Congressional Republicans who have sold their souls to Donald Trump. They refuse to believe Trump did anything wrong. To them, impeachment is just an attempt by Democrats to "undo the 2016 Presidential election." In November 2019, The Daily Beast correspondent Michael Tomasky wrote, "The modern GOP is an un-American party. It is not interested in democracy; it is interested in power and it doesn't care how it gets it." Today, Tomasky takes a further look at Republicans' attitude toward impeachment:
Republicans can't win Presidential elections anymore but they sure can steal them
They can go on about "Federalist" this or "Hamilton's letter" that, but the fact is that impeachment is in the Constitution, with no "unless we’re coming up on an election" exception.

King Donald the First failed in his scheme to pressure Ukraine into digging up dirt on Joe Biden, his likely opponent in the 2020 Presidential election. Unfortunately, Trump's sleazy lawyers and Congressional Republicans have been using the impeachment trial to do what Trump wanted Ukraine to do. They've been smearing Biden with unfounded accusations of corruption, even though Biden is not on trial; Trump is. Trump has no shame and no ethics. Neither do his lawyers.
Opinion: Trump is getting exactly what he wanted

Emperor Trump told John Bolton the withholding of Ukraine aid was a means of pressuring Ukraine into digging up dirt on Joe Biden. Trump, of course, denies this. Senior White House officials all knew about Trump's quid-pro-quo offer. Trump, of course, denies this. Trump asked Bolton to set up a meeting between Ukraine's President and Rudy Giuliani. Trump, of course, denies this. Senate Republicans, all of whom have sold their souls to Donald Trump, refuse to allow Bolton to testify during the impeachment trial. They want a trial with no witnesses and no documents. They do not want to hear the truth. It doesn't matter to them. They will unanimously vote to acquit the most crooked, corrupt, dishonest, deranged, erratic, power-mad, self-serving buffoon who has ever lived. And who cares about some silly old Constitution anyway?

Letter from Katrin Wiese of Rialto in today's Los Angeles Times:
"I guess it's finally time to change parties. Being a Republican is just so darned convenient. Anytime one of us gets in trouble, we can just all get together and not allow any witnesses to testify against us."

In 2020, the Republican party exists in name only. It has become the Donald Trump party, a cult led by an orange-skinned dictator who knows his brainwashed, blindly loyal supporters – and Congressional Republicans in particular – will always worship him, support him, protect him, defend him and even march through the flames of hell if he asked them to. Mmm, look! Cyanide-laced grape Flavor Aid!

BREAKING NEWS: The Senate just finished voting on whether to allow witnesses and documents at Trump's impeachment trial. The vote was 51 no, 49 yes.
WHAT THE VOTE MEANS: The trial is a sham – no witnesses and no documents. And with a Republican majority in the Senate, the outcome was never in doubt. Senate Republicans have sold their souls to Donald Trump and they will unanimously vote for acquittal, ensuring King Donald the First remains above the law and above the Constitution, answerable to no one and accountable to no one.

Can anyone explain how and why Republicans continue to support, protect and defend a President who lies constantly and is a lewd, crude, nasty, immature, petulant, bigoted, racist, crooked, corrupt, dishonest, unethical, deranged, erratic, power-mad, self-serving buffoon who has brought shame and disgrace to the office of the Presidency and to the United States of America? I certainly can't explain it.

Justice? Fairness? Impartial jurors? The Presidential oath of office? The rule of law? The Constitution of the United States of America? Those things no longer exist in Trumpworld, the topsy-turvy land of delusions where wrong is right, bad is good, down is up and the leader is an orange-skinned Pied Piper who has complete control of all the mindless little rats who inexplicably follow his irresistible lure. We now have an autocracy. King Donald the First is above the law and above the Constitution. He is free to do exactly what he claimed Article II gives him the power to do: Whatever he wants. We should all be afraid. Very afraid.
In an unprecedented move, the Senate voted against calling witnesses in Trump's impeachment trial
The Senate called witnesses in all 15 previous impeachment trials in US history, including those of Presidents Andrew Johnson and Bill Clinton.

King Donald the First ordered his aides and cabinet members to refuse to cooperate with the Mueller investigation. King Donald the First ordered his aides and cabinet members to ignore subpoenas in the House impeachment investigation. He ordered them to refuse to testify and to refuse to provide documents. King Donald himself hid evidence and refused to turn over subpoenaed documents.
On October 26, the three House committee chairmen said in a statement, "If such an abuse of authority by the President to muzzle current and former officials from disclosing to Congress evidence of his own misconduct were to stand, it would inflict obvious and grave damage to the House's capacity to carry out its core Article I functions under the Constitution, including its impeachment inquiry into the President's actions. This would fundamentally alter the separation of powers that forms the bedrock of American democracy."
Well, guess what? Today, January 31, 2020, that abuse of authority was allowed to stand, per the vote of the Senate Republicans who have sold their souls to Donald Trump. The President of the United States now knows he can abuse his power, withhold Congressionally-approved military aid and try to pressure a foreign country to dig up dirt on a political rival – all with impunity. He knows he can obstruct investigations, hide evidence, threaten and intimidate witnesses, ignore subpoenas and order his aides to ignore subpoenas – all with impunity. King Donald the First is now above the law and above the Constitution, answerable to no one and accountable to no one.
Donald Trump has not made America "great." He has made America an autocracy and a dictatorship. Trump hat Amerika völlig gestört. Moge Gött uns helfen.

As of this minute, the United States population is estimated to be 330,205,625, according to https://www.worldometers.info/world-...us-population/ – and only one of those 330,205,625 Americans is above the law. King Donald the First has been given absolute power by Congressional Republicans, who have sold their souls to him. Witnesses can be called in any civil trial or criminal trial. Witnesses have been called at 15 impeachment trials in US history. For the trial of King Donald the First, no witnesses were called and no documents were produced. His trial was a complete sham, with a pre-ordained outcome. Congressional Republicans worship him as a god, one who can do no wrong. They are brainwashed, blindly loyal members of the Cult of Donald Trump. They condone Trump's abuse of power, obstruction of investigations, refusal to comply with subpoenas, withholding of evidence, intimidation of witnesses and hundreds of other offenses. Trump and the Republican party are all that matters. The rule of law, the Constitution, the Presidential oath of office, national security and the integrity of our elections mean absolutely nothing. This is the saddest time in our nation's history.

No United States President has the power to halt, suspend or overturn legislation passed by Congress. King Donald the First did it anyway – because he's above the law and above the Constitution. He froze Congressionally-approved military aid to Ukraine and dangled it as a bribe to force Ukraine into investigating Joe Biden, Trump's likely opponent in the 2020 election. And, because King Donald the First is above the law and above the Constitution, he withheld all the evidence from his impeachment investigation and the Senate trial. He can do that because he's the all-powerful King, answerable to no one and accountable to one.

Letter from Eileen Elvins of Dana Point in today's Los Angeles Times:
"Help me understand: Have an affair in the White House, lie under oath and you are impeached. But take an oath to protect the Constitution, lie repeatedly, threaten to withhold aid from a foreign government if it does not investigate your political opponent and the Republicans think this should not warrant removal? Senate Republicans have just torn up Article II of the Constitution and allowed a bullying dictator to take control. I weep for what was once our democracy."
And from Earle Hartling of Culver City:
"The evidence presented in Donald Trump's impeachment trial clearly showed that the President is using the vast power of his office to further his own political ambitions. Strip away all the verbosity, spin and deflection and we are left with an existential threat to our democracy through the manipulation of our electoral process. Rationalizations, flimsy excuses and contorted legalese will not protect the Senators who saved Trump. They will be remembered for where they stood on this."

In an editorial today, the Los Angeles Times says Trump's "his incompetence, his bigoted rants against immigrants, his cruel and chaotic domestic policies and his shambles of a foreign policy" are "shortcomings for which the voters should punish him at the ballot box." The remedy for abuse of power, however, is impeachment and removal from office.
"Trump solicited the interference of a foreign government in the 2020 election to benefit himself and harm his opponent," the editorial continues. "That's a terribly serious abuse of the powers given to the President by the voters to be used on their behalf. It smacks of extortion or bribery. It is a clear perversion of the electoral system." The Times is urging Senators to vote to find Trump guilty – and acknowledging with dismay that they will "most likely vote along party lines to acquit the President the Republican majority has defended from the start." Congressional Republicans have sold their souls to Donald Trump. The Republican party now exists in name only. It has become the Donald Trump party, a cult of brainwashed, blindly loyal followers who worship their orange-skinned cult leader as if he's a god.

If, God forbid, we ever have another President who, same as Donald Trump, is an incompetent, deranged, erratic, unpredictable, self-serving buffoon who believes he is above the law and above the Constitution and can do whatever he wants, he will be able to abuse his power in ways King Donald the First never dreamed of. By voting for acquittal in Trump's impeachment trial, Congressional Republicans will effectively be voiding the Constitution, eliminating the Presidential oath of office and abolishing our nation's separation of powers and our system of checks and balances. By voting to acquit Donald Trump, Senate Republicans are effectively telling him his power and authority have no limits. He can do anything he wants. He is answerable to no one and accountable no one. He is free to disregard the law and disregard the Constitution. With no restraints and no restrictions, the self-serving, power-mad King Donald the First can finally assume his rightful place alongside Hitler, Stalin, Lenin, Mao, Pol Pot, Idi Amin, Ho Chi Minh, Nicholas II, Kim Jong-Il and Bashar al-Assad.

King Donald the First believes Article II of the Constitution gives him the power to do whatever he wants, with no oversight and no accountability. Senate Republicans, all of whom have sold their souls to Donald Trump, have abandoned their Constitutional duty to serve as a check on the President's powers. By refusing to hold Trump accountable for abusing the power of his office, suspending Ukraine aid without consent of Congress, seeking re-election help from a foreign country, ignoring subpoenas, hiding evidence, threatening witnesses and obstructing investigations, Senate Republicans are telling him he can indeed do whatever he wants, with no oversight and no accountability. They ensure Trump remains above the law and above the Constitution, answerable to no one. He is now an autocrat, a dictator, a King. Voters will never forget how Congressional Republicans made a false god out of a vain, pompous, crooked, corrupt, dishonest, deranged, erratic, unpredictable, unstable, immature, narcissistic, egotistical, self-serving, orange-skinned buffoon.

Letter from Dan Radlauer of Los Angeles in today's Los Angeles Times:
"After all the posturing, smearing of dedicated civil servants, promotion of Russian propaganda and the twisting of Constitutional norms, the most honest defense of the President's behavior came not from Trump's impeachment lawyers or outraged members of Congress but from White House acting Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney: 'Get over it.' So, the Senate got over it.
Grab women by the genitals – get over it. Russia, if you're listening – get over it. The media are the enemy of the people – get over it. Article II lets me do anything I want – get over it. Well-documented abuse of power – get over it. Checks and balances – get over it. When the history books tell the story of how the Presidency because so authoritarian, it won't be because of Russia or China or angry mobs in the street or a military coup. The blame will fall squarely on the US Senate in 2020. But, hey, get over it."

I wonder how Senate Republicans, all of whom have sold their souls to Donald Trump, will try to explain to their constituents why they see absolutely nothing wrong with Trump abusing the power of his office, suspending Ukraine aid without consent of Congress, seeking re-election help from a foreign country, ignoring subpoenas, hiding evidence, threatening witnesses and obstructing investigations. I'm sure they wouldn't condone all those things if a Democratic President did them. Senate Republicans have ensured that King Donald the First remains above the law and above the Constitution, answerable to no one and accountable to no one.
Tim Kaine: They have 'allowed a toxic President to infect the Senate'
CNN, Feb 4 2020 2:09 PM ET
Senator Tim Kaine, a Democrat from Virginia, said the Senate impeachment proceedings "cannot be called a trial" because of the voting down of witnesses and documents. Kaine said President Trump's behavior is "appalling" but not "a surprise" to him. Kaine went on to say the public knew Trump would seek foreign help in the 2020 election because "he did so in 2016," a reference to Trump asking Russia to find the missing emails of Kaine's running mate Hillary Clinton. Kaine added that the Senate's "capitulation to Trump has surprised me." He said the Senate has "allowed a toxic President to infect the Senate and warp its behavior."

Romney says he will vote to convict Trump in impeachment trial
Reuters, Feb 5 2020 2:20 PM
Republican Senator Mitt Romney said today that he will vote to convict President Donald Trump on the impeachment article charging abuse of power, breaking with his party to support removing Trump from office. "I believe attempting to corrupt an election to maintain power is about as egregious an assault on the Constitution as can be made," Romney told the New York Times. "And for that reason, it is a high crime and misdemeanor and I have no choice under the oath that I took but to express that conclusion." Romney, a moderate, had sided with Democrats in calling for more witness testimony in Trump's impeachment trial, a move Republicans blocked. Once the party's standard-bearer as its 2012 Presidential nominee, Romney has at times been out of step with a party now fully behind the President.

Senate Republicans, all of whom have sold their souls to Donald Trump and who value Trump and their party above the Constitution, above the rule of law, above the Presidential oath of office, above national security, above the separation of powers, above the integrity of our elections and above our nation's system of checks and balances, have voted to acquit King Donald the First. He remains above the law and above the Constitution, free to do whatever he wants, accountable to no one and answerable to no one. Today is the saddest day in our nation's history.
The vote for acquittal on the first article of impeachment, abuse of power, was 52-48. By voting for conviction, Mitt Romney became the first Senator in US history to vote to convict a President from the same party in an impeachment trial. The vote for acquittal on the second article of impeachment, obstruction of Congress, was 53-47.
